“1,500 sheep crossed the streets of the centre of Madrid observed by curious on-lookers, to celebrate ten years of the law that protects the royal flocks (ed. see first comment below – thanks Luis), and to defend their rights to seasonal livestock migration.” Photo – El Mundo.

Hola.
The law doesn’t protect the royal flocks. As long as I know, the king doesn’t own any sheep. The law protect the “cañadas”, the traditional paths used by the privately owned flocks to go to the winter grazing lands and back.
This “cañadas” exist since the Middle Age, when the powerful “Mesta”, or livestock owners association, patronized and protected these paths. As nowadays la “transhumancia”, or seasonal migration, is not used anymore, more and more cañadas have been invaded by roads or private property.
Keep on with your podcast. Seeing the Spanish way of living from a different point of view is funny.

Thanks for that, my mis-translation of ‘cañadas’.
