Las Fallas, Valencia

My ‘Notes from Spain Flickr group‘ photo of the month has to be this shot, recently uploaded by Steve W, and taken back in March in Valencia’s ‘Las Fallas’.

I may well be biased as Las Fallas is definitely my favourite fiesta in Spain, but I love the way the boy is leaping away from the flames. Keep posting your pictures to the group and let me know if you have any suggestions for next month’s winner!

I remember reading something like this in ‘Errant in Iberia’. It sounded a bit mental to me but seeing it is even worse! When the people in the nearby houses are selling, do they advertise their proximity to the fires as a ‘fine view of the fiesta’ or as a fire risk? Do they pay higher house insurance? I agree with what you said in EII about us needing to be a bit more relaxed and enjoy a few risks but… well…???

Judging by the enthusiasm with which they douse the nearest houses with water, I’d say they are all owned by local firemen! Yes, it is without doubt the maddest thing I have ever seen, and it still amazes me that Valencia has not suffered a disaster on the scale of the great fire of London… You have to check it out some time.
