Avoiding those pesky (and pricey) 902 numbers

by Ben Curtis

One for those of us based in Spain, and a a great implementation of the wiki concept. The top-rate 902, 901 and 806 numbers in Spain are used mercilessly by customer service departments and really help ramp up the phone bill. Well, it turns out that for most of these numbers there is usually a cheap local rate alternative. nomasnumeros900.com collects these in their wiki and lets you search for them from their homepage. Worth bookmarking I think!

There’s a similar thing for UK users to avoid 0870 and 0845 numbers called www.saynoto0870.com

0845 is a good idea in principal as it gives local call rates from anywhere in the UK, but the rip-off is that many people these days get their land-line calls included in a pre-paid package, and these 0845’s are often excluded from these deals.

Even though I am in Spain a lot, I guess I don’t call customer service too often. What are these numbers that cost you money to call? In the US, all customer service is an 800 or 888 number and are free.

Lucky you… in Spain they can charge you half a euro a minute to talk to your bank if they want to….

I have always wondered if these companies make money when you call one of these 900s number because they always make you wait and wait and wait. I remember once we called Telefonica to complain about something, we were on the phone for about an hour between being put on hold and transferred between different departments.
