The festival scene is growing every year in Spain, and though there is nothing quite on a par with the UK’s Glastonbury extravaganza, some big bands (and a few 80′s throwbacks) are now coming over here every summer to entertain you in the sun.
Top of every serious muso’s list is the Festival Internacional de Benicí ssim (19th to 22nd July), this year bringing a strange mix-up of acts including Arctic Monkeys and The Human League (!?) to this pleasant Mediterranean resort. Madrid’s up and coming Summercase (July 13th and 14th) is more my cup of tea (despite Madrid’s lack of beach), wih The Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Jarvis Cocker, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and OMD.

Ben – is there a rockabilly scene in Madrid? I saw that Torremolinos had a big rockabilly week-long event last year, I wonder if other cities have an interest in this kind of music?

Not that I know of. The music scene in Madrid is so poor that one Spanish friend who collects old rock and roll LP’s and loves live gigs is hoping to move to London soon, just so he can relish in a bit of live music for a couple of years!

Typing “rockabilly” and “madrid” into Google brings up some interesting results.
Unfortunately, the Spanish version of many of the world’s best genres are often a shadow of their original selves. You’ve been warned!

It’s curious, isn’t it. With the exception of Viña Rock, the bills for the other festivals in the 20minutos piece are almost exclusively US or British. Still, nice to know some of those bands get to supplement their pensions

There is no mention of the Celtic music festival in Ortigueira, Galicia.
It is on between the 5 and 8 July 2007– web site below.

Benicassim is more like Reading in the sun every year with the amount of British punters (and a line up maybe 25% as good).
