Spain to become High-Speed-Train-Spotters Dream

“The [220mph] Ave S103 is the kind of train that British commuters can only dream of, and forms the centrepiece of plans to make Spain a model for the rest of Europe, and the world leader in high-speed trains by 2010.”

“The aim is to have 10,000km (6,200 miles) of high-speed track in Spain by 2020, meaning that 90% of the population will be no more than 30 miles from a station through which the train passes.” Whether the train actually stops in said stations may be another matter…

I have taken the Madrid-Sevilla AVE line and I have to say that it is an absolute marvel. If Seattle-Portland-San Francisco were linked by a similar line, travel times between those cities would rival that of commuter flights when you factor in airline security and just getting to the airport and back. Instead of building a high-speed rail network we are building SUVs with 10 cylinders. I don’t know what I hate more: driving or flying.

P.S. The Madrid-Valencia line is projected for 2010 I believe.

I read this article in the paper and it seemed to mention a AVE line from Perpignon/Paris to Madrid but wasn’t clear. Anyone know?

Great! Wonderful! Let’s see if RENFE actually complies with European Union requirements and puts space to carry bikes on THIS train…

Does anyone know when the high speed trains are going to be linking the Marina Alta region? There aren’t any rail links through to Denia yet!
