I´m Spanish (so please excuse my english and feel free to correct me) and I`d love to be helpfull to someone. If you are thinking about living in Madrid but don`t like the flaws of this city you can consider move to small cities like Pozuelo, Boadilla, Majadahonda, Torrelodones, Galapagar, Villalba, Alpedrete (depending on your income or preferences as these are places from middle to high class) these cities are small but very well comunicated to Madrid by train, buses, Nacional VI road. From Villalba it takes 30 to 45 minutes by bus in rush hour to take to Moncloa for about 60€ a month you get a transport card that allows you to use all public transport in B3 area with no limit wich also includes all public transport in Madrid subway, buses, trains. For example from Villalba there is a train to Madrid in rush hour every 5 minutes that takes about 50 minutes, by car in rush hour it takes more time (and a lot more money) because the traffic jams and you`ll need a parking once you get to Madrid but out of rush hours it takes just 25 to 30 minutes (40 kilometers). Torrelodones is avery nice place to live and it´s closer, lots of big houses(also appartments) but very expensive as Pozuelo or Boadilla as a lot of the richiest people loves to live close to Madrid but in smaller cities. My point is that you can choose lots of nice places close to madrid but be sure that commuting to Madrid is good and in the worst case it won´t take you more than 1 hour to get to Madrid as I consider more time very hard on a day to day living.
Google for this cities or check rent & buying houses prices at idealista.com

oh, i loved barcelona when i visited. lot of hills though. I live in a city now, although a smaller city – but its great for environmentalists, bike riders, and cultural enthusiasts in general.
