Hot Here, Green There

Asturias, Picos de Europa

As Madrid settles comfortably into the mid-thirties (day AND night in our flat – never buy a top-floor flat in Madrid!), I dream again of the green north.

A friend sent me an interesting link of different walking routes around Asturias – even if you think you might never do the treks, the photos are like a refreshing breeze on these hot summer days – click the numbers on the map here:

-Update: it’s raining here now! Getting more Asturian by the minute!

Oh no! We were going to buy a top floor flat in Madrid! So that we can have a terraza and no one would be able to spill water on to our ceiling. What do I do now, I’m not sure we can live without a terraza?

      Save up for aircon

Yes, aircon is the way forward – but I almost think I’d rather have an extra room an a small terrace, than a big terrace for a huge premium!

I think I would too in your situation – we have one son at home – you know the one – ten rooms and a garden are sometimes not big enough!!!

I’m definitely a city person, but I agree with Ben that it can get a bit much in summer in Madrid. In fact I’m currently working in London, and hope the temperature doesn’t rise much more as the UK capital doesn’t really cope well with higher temperatures. Yes Asturias (or anywhere along that northern Spanish coast) looks very appealing at this time of year!

Wow,that’s just an amazing picture you’ve got! Love it.

  5. I cannot wait to be there at the start of August for a week. That photo is great but there are so many places like that in Asturias “Paraiso Natural”

Thanks, Ben. It’s really useful to know that you’d swap your terraza for an extra room. It looks like I’m going to be moving down to Madrid pretty soon so I need all the advice I can get. I know this is off topic for this post and more of a forum question but can anyone recommend a barrio to live in in Madrid? I know this is a big ask: I want somewhere relatively peaceful, relatively green and pretty, with good schools nearby. It would be great to live in the centre but there any nice areas outside? I quite like El Pardo but am not keen on most of the new ugly building developments.

Live near the Retiro! It’s the only way to get much green in the center itself… as far as I know. As for ‘outside’ – in terms of the suburbs, I don’t really know… we constantly ask ourselves the same question!

oops, should read “It would be great to live in the centre but are there any nice areas outside?”

That picture is quite the quintessential setting for a Heidi movie. One day I’ll check out that greenery and replenish with Fabada y sidra.
