Wind energy in Spain

Wind energy, Spain

More and more of these are springing up across the landscapes of Spain… I think they are rather beautiful when found in small numbers like this (these are near the vilage of Lanjaron, in the Alpujarras). Marina pointed out that they might be seen as being even more beautiful still, if you consider that they are doing a lot to safeguard the environment as they spin slowly round…

Getting Back into Photography, and Bolonia Beach…

Dunes, Bolonia

I read a great post about photowalking the other day, and have been inspired to start taking my good camera everywhere with me again (my EOS 350 SLR, as opposed to the wonderful but less dynamic Ixus 700).

I used to be an avid photographer, but in recent times have let it slip – there is just two much extra media to play with (audio, video, writing…) Let’s see what happens. The image above (large version) was taken in Bolonia, Costa de la Luz, one of my favourite beaches on the planet, which thankfully is not winning in the 20minutos.com ‘Best Beach’ competition – please take time to vote for one of the other finalists, to keep Bolonia off the map!

And don’t forget to check out our Notes from Spain flickr group every now and again, there are some inspiring photos on there. Why not add one of yours?

The perfect summer … a hot Andaluz afternoon, the Sierra shimmering in the background, the cool blue of the village pool…

NFS Flickr Group Spain photo of the month: May

Menorca

Can’t help it, I’m a sucker for clouds, and for desolate landscapes for that matter too, so this month’s NFS Flickr Group pic of the month award goes to Nodriman (Germán) with this stunning photo of an old military barracks near the sea, a few kilometers north of the city of Ciutadella in Menorca.

Menorca is a place I have yet to visit, and I suggest you take a minute to have a look at Nodriman’s other Menorca photos – mouthwatering stuff – have you ever seen sea that colour before?

Flickr Spain photo of the month: March

From all the amazing shots in our Flickr group last month, your vote went to Fred Shively’s “A town called Lanjarón 4: an early escalator“:

Lanjaron 4, by Fred Shively

You can see more of Fred’s photos over at Flickr. I’d like to add another winner, Steve, with his amazing photo “Fiesta in Gracia“:

Fiesta in Gracia, by Steve

It was taken at a local fiesta in Gracia, a neighbourhood in Barcelona, complete with political speeches in favour of the okupas, drummers, 2 dragons, and a group of people firing antique muskets into the air! Steve commented, “I’ve no idea if it’s an Easter thing or not. It seemed very pagan with the devil costumes and dragons.” It seems the pagan and the Christian are often closely mixed in Spain… You can see more of Steve’s photos on Flickr, and at his daily photo blog, bcncamara.blogspot.com

Flickr Spain photo of the month: Help!

Oh goodness, I need your help again. How can I choose an NFS Flickr pic of the month from this lot? Just have a look through the photos on the most recent four pages (which roughly correspond to March) and tell me which you like best. The quality is astounding. Let me know your favourites, and I’ll publish them here later this week.

12 Good reasons to go to Spain in 2007

leave a comment

NFS CalendarOur NFS 2007 Photo Calendar shows you a great reason to visit (or move to!) Spain every month of the year. All of the large, colourful photos come from my personal collection, gathered over 8 years of wandering through this beautiful country. Much better than the usual calendars you see in the shops at this time of year, because, like everything else in the new Notes Shop, this one also helps support Notes from Spain! ;)

NFS Spain Photo: Tarragona Human Castles

Castells Tarragona

During the first weekend of October of even years (2006, 2008 etc), Tarragona bullring holds one of the most bizarre spectacles to be found in Spain, the ‘Concurso de Castells’, the human castles competition. Every year there are serious injuries as these towers topple to the ground, the worst of which led to the death of a twelve-year-old girl earlier this month in Capgrossos de Mataró (Barcelona), when she fell from the top of a nine-story castle.

Marina and I spent the weekend in Galicia attending a wedding. While the priest delivers the sermon a villager observes from a side chapel. More tomorrow in a podcast from our trip. Photo by Ben.
