View Full Version : Help needed urgently with new ˇIpod!

I have bought an ˇPod Nano today but what I feared has happened; even though I have been able to download the necessary software, I can't get the pinche aparato working, let alone download a podcast. I don't even understand the manual because the ˇPod doesn't do what it supposed to do. I've given up after two hours of fumbling with it. Of course, the young shop attendant said it was all 'very simple'. NOT. Even the menu on the display is not what it is supposed to be according to the manual - for instance, I can't turn the volume up or down even though it's supposed to be very simple. I have never understood manuals anyway - they are Greek to me because some essential info always seems to be missing from them like pushing this button or that one. Please, someone, help me! I am extremely clumsy when it comes to things like this and I mean extremely. Sorry for sounding slightly panicky but I'm just very irritated because I can't figure this out on my own. It's not the first time and I'm afraid it won't be the last. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow Edith!

Welcome to my world :). Let me help you find your way around the iPod.

At first its a bit confusing, but are you familiar with how to use the 'round' touch pad? For adjusting volume, once you are listening to your music/song, lightly roll your thumb around the pad from left to right. Its quite diffent to the way you do volume with the old walkmans!

The application you want to use (written by the creators of the iPod - apple) is called iTunes.

The latest free version is here:

http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/download/

once installed, you will see your library etc. When you plug in your ipod, it will automatically find it, and will update it with the latest software if needed.

To way i usually add podcasts is via iTunes,

Advanced > Subscribe to podcast (see image below)

putting the link in to the window provided. For further info on this software, its best to read the help or internet. But your ipod will appear under 'Devices', and you can drag and drop files on at will, as well as arrange groups, playlists etc.

Also,

when using your iPod, just to be clear,

you turn it on by holding down the middle 'button' as it were, althought its all one touch pad really.

Like the volume, you go up and down by lightly rolling your finger from left to right on the pad. You press the middle button to make that selection, or the menu button to go back up a directory, as it were.

Does any of this help/make sense?

No need to panic, Edith. Once you figure out the ins and outs on your iPod, you'll be fine. Apple's support pages for iPods are wonderful:

Edith - I'm pretty tech-savvy, but I found (and still find) the wheel to be awkward to manipulate sometimes.

As Que noted, you have to move your finger lightly around the touchpad. The easiest way (I think) to describe it is that you aren't actually trying to MOVE the wheel. Just run your finger over it...say from the :

l<< arrow, over the "Menu" button and to the >>l arrow

to increase the volume

Is there anybody near you (especially a kid, since they can figure this stuff out in no time flat) that can give you a quick demo? Sometimes it's easiest just to have somebody show you.

I love my iPod, I have had 3 now. Another confusing thing, is that every iPod has a hold switch, you might inadvertantly switch it into the on position which locks the iPod(it still plays music, but touch wheel becomes inactive, this is a great way to save battery life by the way)

Apple's support is great by the, did you by any chance buy it an a Apple store or live close to one, they are great

I had to reset/restore my iPod after upgrading to iTunes7, which is greatly different from prior versions. Anyone else experience this?

I didn't have to reset it, but I was confused about syncing, as there are some real changes.

Don't upgrade to iTunes 7, I repeat do not. There are many issues with it, you are better of to stick with iTunes 6 until the get a patch for 7. People are experincing probelms with updating iPods, formatting, and sound quality, plus it's ugly

Now you tell me! ;)

I do like some of the new options now, though.

iTunes 7.1 out today....

Heh, so you're admitting to the problems with 7.0? ;)

I wouldn't even download 7.1, also with iTunes it is a good idea to upgrade, espically if you are a audiophile, being weird like they are will change thing each version, so you should wait and let others experince the problems...

Maybe so, but I've got 7.0.3 running, no problems.

Thanks guys, for all the help and encouragement! I'm a bit of a procrastinator when problems like this arise. I downloaded a sixty-page (!) manual and I'm going to take a look at it tonight. The software has been downloaded without a problem, the manual looks daunting though.

It's Apple stuff, so it should be pretty user-friendly reading. ;D

Edith, you will NOT regret getting an iPod. It's one of the best things I've purchased this year.

Well, Apple must be or they wouldnt have released an update - I had no problems with 7 but I am running a Mac - it just works - I have the feeling that when it is ported over for pc the software is sometimes a little buggy to start with - but they respond very quickly and if you dont upgrade it dont get fixed!! Imagine running a version of Windows that has never been service packed - oh, yeah, most of the world does..... Imagine running a car on the same tyers and the same engine oil and filters for the life of the vehicle.

On my Mac the iTunes application always tells you if there are upgrades available and asks you if you want to upgrade. I always say yes. I suspect the problem is that Apple can predict pretty well what you have installed on an Apple computer, whereas it has no way of knowing what nasty little apps you have installed on your PC (or someone else has without you knowing!)

for the record, I have to say I upgraded to 7.0 on Windows XP without any problem at all. It did take a while to analyse my library for "gapless" albums, but it worked fine. I did not try the latest "fixed" version (7.0.1) yet.

I'm just needling you, man. I'm in perfect agreement with all that you said above. Now we just need el Listo chiming in to tell us how Macs and PCs are inherently inferior to the raw power of Linux. :D

I'll tell ya about it in a couple of weeks or so! This is going to be a five-year plan. I downloaded two podcasts from NiS onto my hard disk but they do not appear on ITUnes and there is no info on ITunes in the manual. :-((((

You can drag them into the iTunes library folder, but better is to go into the iTunes Music Store in iTunes, search for notes from spain in the podcast section and click subscribe - it will download the latest podcast and ask you if you want to get the others

I hope so too! Right now I feel like I'm a complete fool! Saturday, a friend will help me. He's computer-illiterate too but he's more savvy as far as manuals are concerned.

Do not despair Edith, believe me, I have crashed and had to learn how to re-format my computers (one for each member of the house) many times. Each time a little more sinks in as to how all this technology works - and thats from one who has to ask her 12 year old to sort out her mobile phone text messages !
I have found nothing beats learning through experimentation and then sorting out the mess afterwards. I have never been one for reading the manuals first.
So my advice is..... play about with the wheel, buttons etc. don't worry too much about how the volume etc works (you will soon discover it when it blasts out at full volume-and that way you remember how to re-produce the effect) get the gist of how the basics work and then once you are comfortable with that, read up how to fine tune it.
Or...... ignore me completely, as I learn to do things completely the opposite to most sane people http://www.clanforen.de/clanforen/images/smilies/smilies031205/hatecomputer.gif

Edith I'm not sure if you already set this up on your itunes but one problem I had with mine was that the podcasts were not going into the ipod although they would download onto my computer. After connecting your ipod to your computer and opening itunes, go into the preferences and in there you can select which podcasts will automatically download onto your ipod. Then the next time you open itunes it should load them in. Not sure if that helps but its worth a try, i'm on the mac version.

I'm still fumbling with ˇTunes, but so far I've been able to download the podcasts into the ipod - albeit in a very haphazard way. :D Thanks for your advice, I will try it out.

I'm going to do the upgrade to 7.1, as Replay Radio recordings are getting put in the Audiobooks section, for whatever reason.
