I was in Madrid last weekend to go to el Rastro and found it extremely busy! Luckily the weather was beautiful, but I think contributed to the number of people walking around.
Is there a time later on in the year that there are less people and it is easier to look at the hundreds of different stalls? (I'm in Segovia until the end of December.)

Hey, we must have been there at the same time!
It may be quieter when the weather cools down, but I wouldn't bet on it. I think the best idea is just to get there early, say 10 a.m.
How's Segovia?

The first time I went, it was 9 o'clock. There were not many people, but then, some of the stalls were still setting up. Also, if you start in the Plaza Mayor, you will see all the colectors stalls. Stamps, currency, books etc. Then, when you make your way to the Rasto proper, you wll be at the top of the very steep slope and not have to climb up against the crowd and gravity as B & M did.

Sorry I think it is crowded all year round, the best option as Richard suggests is to go early. 9:30 should be good!

9:30 is early?!? ;)
Just teasing, but I find it amazing. My 11-year-old is in school by 7:25 AM.

I was afraid of that! We were probably there around 11ish... so next time I'll be on one of the super early busses from Segovia.
How small of a world that we might have been at el Rastro at the same time. I was very excited to see your podcast about it in my iTunes.
And, Segovia is amazing. I love the city, the history, the people, and it's just a great place to spend a semester. I've pretty much visited all the important sites in Segovia, and now are working on the surrounding areas with a trip to Riofrio tomorrow between my classes.
I'm not really looking forward to going back to Michigan.

Sorry for a Saturday in Spain 9:30 is early!!!
Take into account that most the opening time for shops is usually 9:30 or 10:00
If you go to the Rastro much earlier than that I don't think you'll find many stolls opened:rolleyes:

It is really a coincidence that we were in the Rastro at more or less the same time;)
I'm very glad that you are enjoying life in Segovia and don't forget to pay a visit to the Rio Piedra near Sepulveda. There is a nice walk if you start walking along the river in the outskirts of Sepulveda, you slowly enter in a gorge and the vegetation is beautiful. On the other hand if you can go to the Ermita de San Frutos which is about 10 or 15 Km from Sepulveda it has the bests views in the area and incredible birds.
