Does anybody know anything about turntables that convert LPs into CDs?

You don't really need a special turntable - just a PC with an appropriate sound card, a special cable to connect the amp to the sound card, and some recording software.

To do this, I acquired an Olympus LS10 (http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/2581_digital_recorder_ls-10_18555.htm) PCM recorder which has become one of my most treasured gadgets. Though its aimed at recording high quality live sound directly into .WAV format (or MP3/WMA for lower quality), I simply connect its line-in to my amplifier.
When the recording is complete I then transfer the WAV files to the computer via USB to be burned as CD's using Nero Essentials or similar.
I had originally thought of using a lap-top but nowadays few of them have a line-input socket making the built-in soundcard useless. I then researched the cost of a good quality external sound card but eventually decided a stand-alone recorder was the neatest solution.
It will be interesting to know what equipment others have used.

I'd just buy a USB turntable, and load it onto the pc with the software provided, they're quite cheap now. Then you can burn C.D's as and when you please.
Cheapest one I can find is £29.99 on play.com :o (poor reviews on both play & amazon though).
£59.99 for a decent ION one; (sorry just checked on play and they will only deliver clothes, dvds, books, games and music free of charge to Spain).
Just done a search under "tocadiscos usb" (new word for me) :)- they're 99 euros in corte ingles? that one has a usb slot on the front of it so you might be able to record straight onto a flash drive/ usb stick?

£39.99 at maplin (ION have been making USB turntables for a while and are well established. Lots are available on amazon. If you're feeling flush get a nice DENON one :))

I have just been all evening up and down la calle Barquillo and learned an awful lots of things. I have bought a special cable to conect the amp or the turntable directly to the Mac for me.:) The turntable I was looking for is for my brother, for a joint present with my sister. I don't think he would be very excited if we turned up to the party with a piece of cable, particularly because his turntable broke down a couple of years ago. :D

There's a nice tapas bar down that way called La Bardemcilla (http://www.labardemcilla.com/) - owned by Javier Bardem's sister (I think). Nothing to do with turntables I'm afraid.

It looks very nice. Judging from the website they seem to exploit the Bardem connection quite a lot. I know that area reasonably well, but I have never heard of that restaurant.

Yes it's a bit Bardem-centric. I first went there just before "Mar Adentro" came out and it just had lots of photos of various members of the Bardem family on the walls (I believe a few of them were involved in cinema). It was a bit of a novelty at the time. However I guess that now Javier is so famous they might be milking it a bit more (it's been a few years since I last went there).
