Advice on Itinerary

May, 2010, after repositioning cruise with port calls in Funchal, Cadiz, Malaga & Alicante, debarking, Thursday morning in Barcelona 3 nights in Barcelona, departing Sunday noon, rental car to Catalayud (5.5 hours, well reviewed convenient hotel for overnight stop). Monday AM, drive to Toledo (3.5 hours). Monday & Tuesday nights in Toledo, Wednesday afternoon drive to el Escorial (1.5 hours). Thursday, visit el Escorial, then drive 1 hour into Madrid, staying 4 nights near Plaza Mayor. Monday afternoon DPT MAD for DFW.

Sounds OK to me. Bear in mind that May 1 is a holiday in Spain, May 2 is a holiday in the Madrid province, and May 15 is a holiday in Madrid city. Things will be closed on those days.

Wednesday afternoon drive to el Escorial (1.5 hours). Thursday, visit el Escorial, then drive 1 hour into Madrid, staying 4 nights near Plaza Mayor. Monday afternoon DPT MAD for DFW.

Try to make time after El Escorial to drive over to Segovia (about 55km or 1 hour) to see the Roman Aquaduct and then drive to Madrid via the road over the Guadarrama- views are fantastic!
