View Full Version : Question about London

So, I received this very lovely offer from a friend of mine in London and I have two questions:
"It has 3 double bedrooms (albeit the 3rd is ‘snug’), 2 receptions, and is in Holland Park. It also has a part-time housekeeper to ensure it is cleaned, sheets changed,…
All I would ask is that you leave it clean and tidy, …"
a) Where is Holland Park? I've been to London twice, but don't know this area. Would there be things to do near there?
b) 2 receptions? Is that entrances? Bathrooms?
I'm usually quite good at deciphering Brit-isms, but I don't think I've heard this one.
Thanks ;D

Well Holand park is quite close to hype park.
There are plenty of tube stations close by, so you have quick access to all major parts of london.
In the case of '2 receptions' i would assume that refers to two extra rooms, such as a sitting room (lounge), and a dinning room.

ah, that makes sense! I don't like to receive anybody in the bathroom ;D

You would be surprised how people describe rooms over here - sometimes a 5ft by 5ft 'closet' gets described as a bedroom!
I agree that 2 receptions means living room and dining room usually!
Holland Park is not too far from central London, it's only about 10 minutes by tube train from the West End which is the main nightlife centre. There are also restaurants and bars nearby. Hope that helps!

Oh, living in NYC, I know how they like to describe rooms! Quiant, charming, etc. are major red flags. That said, this is a friend....one with kooky expressions, but I'm sure a perfectly lovely flat.
I may just have to take him up on the offer! I've been to London, but don't know my way around too well as I was always with locals who just take you places....never had to take the tube alone, etc. (I can do that in Madrid, though ;D )

I think that the offer is very good so suggest that you take it . Holland Park area is delightful, a mixture of posh and earthy with a vibrant main road and some interesting history. Listen to the podcast walk which was one of the best, and even as a Londoner I learnt a great deal and downlod it for a brilliant way to get to know the area when you arrive.
Enjoy

Snug means not really big enough for a double bed but we put one in anyway...
