Hello,
We need a car for two days to drive from Barcelona, through Valencia, and then finish and drop off in Granada in 2 days time (should be about 4 hours each day of driving, staying the night in Valencia).
I want to book the car in advance (before leaving the U.S.) but am simply overwhelmed and confused by the online options I've been searching through.
Please help! What is recommended? I have found prices as low as 88 dollars total for the two days, up to 250 dollars or more. We want a basic, simple, affordable car, nothing fancy...
Anybody with advice / experience in this matter, with possible renters to recommended, please speak up!
thanks,
-Michael

I have rented many times cars with holidays autos (http://www.holidayautos.com/USA/splash/) without a problem.

Book directly with your favourite US rental company rather than attempt to do so via a middleman website- its safer and usually cheaper!

I will be renting a car when I go to Alicante for the first week, around the 9th May.
Do you think it will be a better idea to pre book car rental to pick up at the airport, or just get car rental at the airport?

It is always cheaper to pre book a car to pick up at the airport. Just to give you an idea, I have rented a car for 4-5 days for €100-120 in the past, and last week with the volcano business and the strike of the french railways, I ended up having to rent a car for €222 for one day in France with AVIS.
If you use holidayautos, you need to do it on the web it at least one week in advance.

Just a 'Heads up' - check the small print to see if they have a maximum mileage allowance per day - some companies allow 100 kms per day and then charge an excess for every mile that you travel over and above this. What you thought was originally a competetive rate can turn out to be quite expensive if you were unaware of this, and I see that you will be traveling quite some distance aswell !
