We're travelling in northern Spain in August this year, and I've been searching on the web for hotels or hostels with family rooms (for 2 adults and 2 young children). The best I've come up with so far is a few places with rooms for three (which may be able to squeeze another bed in).
Are family rooms not very common in Spain or am I searching on the wrong keywords?

In hotels is not very common to have a room for four people. Usually you get a room for three if you are travelling with a child or two rooms that are comunicated through an interior door if you are traveling with two children.
However if traveling in the North I would recommend you have a look at "Casas Rurales" (http://en.toprural.com/index.cfm), which are country houses, and some of them have rooms for four or two rooms apartments.

Gracias Marina, we've found some good places to stay through the Casas Rurales site.
