I was wondering if anyone has seen the film "Alatriste" yet, and what are your thoughts on it. It has a great cast with Viggo Mortensen and Eduardo Noriega, and quite a large budget.

It was supposed to open Dec 22 in the US, but it looks like they lost the original distributor. Now they say some time in 2007. How long in Spain does it take from opening in theaters to DVD, might just have to buy this when I go(along with some other spanish movies that I can't get here)

It's not due for release in the UK until March 2007 :(

Alatriste is being shown in NYC this coming weekend Dec 9th and 10th, but just for those 2 days as part of a festival of Spanish film. If anyone is in the area, it is 2 weeks of great films at Lincoln Center called Spanish Cinema Now!

Saw Alatriste a couple of months ago in a cinema in Oviedo. I think it was a wet tuesday afternoon and there were about three of us watching. My Spanish isn't bad but I found it hard to work out what was going on at times. I think it's worth seeing as it looks great and Viggo Mortensen was a grizzled and proud Alatriste. However, it seemed to switch around (time, location, character) alot and it struck me that they tried to fit too much in.
It gets a half-hearted thumbs up from me, but it's nowhere near as good as Pan's Labyrinth. Saw that last night and it was superb.
