Just out of curiosity, does anyone out there watch the spanish news...and if so which is your preferred channel and why?
Im quite partial to La 2 myself. I think any news program thats starts with...Que tal...gets my vote.

I watch TVE 24 Horas Internacional, which is the only channel I get. I watch the news there almost daily.

Funny you mention that because I just started receiving TVE Internacional and TVE Documentaries from my cable TV provider RCN.

La Primera is good for news; I think Lorenzo's mouth movements must make him a favourite with people who lip read. Sometimes we watch Antena 3 because it steals a march on the others by starting five minutes before the rest straight after Millionaire. I saw Cuatro News for the first time the other night (I think it was on either earlier or later) and I thought that had a distinctive, and enjoyable, style.

And as for HD TV. We've just about got TDT where I live. Signal strength is a bit variable and all the RTVE channels disapeared the other day and stayed missing for about a week before turning up on different frequencies. You my not be going to get the AVE before it roars past us (I'm close to the new line due to open into Alicante in 2008) but at least you can get varied TV.

We're a bit limited for radio here in the sticks too. I can pick up Radio 5 Todo Noticias but only on AM (this is the channel I listen to most), the SER stuff is pretty strong and Ondacero is OK too but I miss the plethora of stations I could pick up when I lived on the Alicante coast for a while. What is it with Cuarenta Principales that it's playlist remains the same for months on end? Radio 3 must be one of the strangest, and most enjoyable, radio stations in the World - Hip Hop/Rap/Dance at breakfast time, Bulgarian nose flute stuff quite often but plenty of Indi pop too.

Of course Lorenzo was shifted over form La2 just after the shake up back when Zapatero got in. I believe La2 and to some extent 4 are a little more experimental, and certianly a lot less reactionary than many of the other channels.

But politics undoubtably does play a part - See: Madrid news strike the other week.

Hi gang !!!
It's been a while since my last post. Anyway, Sometimes I watch the Antena3 morning news before I got to sleep (that'd be 6:00 a.m. Madrid Time and 11:00 p.m. Mexico Central Time) and sometimes I catch the Antena3 news after saturday's and sunday's football game (around 2:00 p.m. Mexico Central Time).

Cheers ;)

I agree. I usually watch LaPrimera because Lorenzo speaks well for my level of Spanish. I don't understand everything, but I can follow the story easier than with many of the other newsreaders.

The news programs I can't stand (and it's gradually becoming the same in England) are the ones presented by the glamourous young women who look like they've come hot-foot from a Stepford Wives convention! It's not a particularly serious news program, but there's a program on La Primera called Gente which covers news about people rather than world events, and it's presenters are a case in point. Truly awful. I find myself staring at the enormous jaw-line of one of the presenters (Sonia) rather than listening to what she's saying! Pics below :o

I still think Anna Ford was by far the best newsreader (she was on the BBC until earlier this year). I imagine she must've been ideal for people learning English. I also liked her because she was knocking on in years a bit and looked like butter wouldn't melt with her air of old-school glamour, but she famously threw a drink over Tory MP (and convicted liar/well-known tosser) Jonathan Aitken after deliberately "topping it up" first to get the maximum effect. How cool is that?? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4949556.stm And to top it all, she didn't go completely quietly (but maintained immaculate dignity) when the BBC tried to gently shove her off air. Quality stuff.

News in La Primera (TVE1) are good with Lorenzo.

Cuatro features one of the most prestigious news broadcaster in Spain, veteran but not out-dated journalist Iñaki Gabilondo, although he hasn´t been able to produce his unique style and great success that he displayed for many years in Radio (he worked for Cadena Ser being number one in audience in his radio news-program 'La Mañana'). In TV, Gabilondo has been some of a flop, but still I admire the man and the different style in which the news are shown.

La Sexta has the prettiest couple of news broadcasters in Spain. Not only they produce beauty for the eyes, but they are good proffesionals too :

Mamen Mendizábal (my favourite, the one in the left of the picture) is very fresh and spontaneous. She learned the bussines working in radio (Cadena Ser, in the famous radio program 'La Ventana') where I remember she once interviewed Ben about Notes From Spain Podcasts (that's how I learned from this site, thanks to my beloved Mámen).

Helena Resano (the one in the right of the picture) has a couple of astonishing mesmerizing eyes, but I'm afraid that is all I can say about her (not unimportant in any case). Oh yes, she was also the substitue for Letizia Ortiz (a.k.a. La Leti, now Princess of Asturias, married to the heir of the Spanish Throne) when she quit her job (news main broadcaster in TVE 1) because of her royal engagement.

That's so funny! :D I guess your voice must carry more weight down at the TV stations. I'm hanckering after a mature, well-spoken, authoritative newsreader to inform me what's going on in the world, but I'm a lone voice in a sea of male TV executives shouting "send on the pretty girls!".

Ah well, at least they're keeping the wheels of the make-up industry turning. I've never seen so much make-up on one person's face with some of the more glamourous presenters! ;D

Eventhough El Corte Ingles and other retailers are selling HD sets in Spain? Aren't consumers in Spain upset over the lack of HD content after making the purchase?

They haven't even got it in the UK as far as I can tell, not mainstream anyway, and things there are usually a year ahead of here in the tech world! People buy these sets in the knowledge that they will be ready when hd arrives.

It appears that the battle of the standards has been settled - the US porn indistry had elected to go with HD DVD so that'll settle it

I get TVE through Directv para todos!

I record via my DVR both the regular and international newscasts.

I recently had my cable box sapped out for one with a DVR. I love it! I love time-shifting tvshows and without the hassle of videocassettes. It even records HD content nicely.

Time shift TV is the only way to watch - you get to make your own channel which only has programmes you like.

Our cable provide also has about 200 old series on a thing calle Teleport Replay so you can watch the whole thing over a couple of days - cant say we ever do - if I get to see 10 hours TV a week I.m lucky so we never get through the recorded stuff

The down side is that my beloved can record QVC and never misses Todays Special Value item....
