Hola Ben y Marina,

I really enjoyed the Lavapies podcast. Soundseeing at its best! I could almost smell the ke-babs. Lavapies kind of reminds of Greenwich Village in New York City. I'm sure it reminds others as well of the more bohemian locales they've experienced.

Thanks again for another enjoyable podcast.

Thanks for the comments. It was one of our more spontaneous podcasts and often we are not sure how they appear to others, so it's great to hear nice feedback like this.

I really enjoyed this episode too, this was a good episode because there was background noise, but not too much. I find it fascinating to hear about spain and the little things..

I remember one podcast that you did from a bar, and it was very difficult to hear you and marina

Here is an article on Madrid from this weekend's FT. It mentions a bar in Lavapies called Barbieri (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/9e980442-239b-11db-ae89-0000779e2340.html).

One of my favourite bars.

(I think the FT is making a mistake by making you pay to read their articles - not a great model with so much good free stuff out there today...)

That's strange. Sorry about that everyone, I wouldn't have posted it had I known, but I didn't get prompted to pay for this article yesterday but now I am too. Agree with you Ben.

We may be in Lavapies tonight so we'll bring our own report of the bar if we are!!

Oh good you lucky ***, any chance of a photo too:) !? I've got the print version of the article but it's not so good that I'll scan it in for you all. Just to say that Café Barbieri was described an an arty establishment that was so busy with people drinking vino tinto that it ran out of wine glasses. Lavapies used to be known as the barrios bajos or 'low neighbourhoods' mainly because the city's tanneries and meatworks were based there. Other bars close by that the reporter tried and liked were:

Candela: Calle de Olmo 3 (does impromptu flamenco shows)
Casa Patas: Calle de Cańizares 10 (restaurant and theatre)
Café Central: Plaza de Angel 10 ("beautiful art deco café")

Could Lavapies be gentrifying?

Bohemiamising maybe!
We'll be there on Thursday in the end, lots of pics to come!

Marbella, here is the pic of the bar you mention above, not a great pic in that it does not capture the vino tinto atmosphere, but maybe it will help give you an idea! I was more focused on podding than photographing that night - the podcast will be out next week.

It does, thank you. Anything that connects me to there is very much appreciated. I'm looking forward to listening to that podcast.

I wish I could transport myself into that bar. It looks so inviting.
