I have this vague recollection that the fixed priced menú del dia was promoted by Franco as a way of ensuring that restaurants had a guaranteed customer base and that the workforce could eat properly.
Someone I know who runs an English language magazine here in Alicante had heard something similar and has been trying to find some information so that he can write a piece on it in his magazine. A Google search hasn't turned up the usual information.
Do any of you have any facts about the fixed menus, when, who, why etc?
