I've read your post about Americans working in Spain- several times, actually- and, as an American who wants very much to move to Spain, I am curious about the experiences of some of the American friends you mentioned. When I go to Spain it will probably be via what Ben optimistically dubbed the "Happy-Go-Lucky No Work Visa Way."
Anyway, I would love to hear from other Americans who have lived in Spain longer than the standard tourist visa allows. Is it a serious matter to be without papers? Does it hinder you anyway? Is there a way to obtain documentation after living in Spain for a length of time?
I know it's a lot of questions, and I thank anyone who can share some of their insight and experience.
