As I told you in the leche merengada (http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190) thread I was in Gandia for the weekend.
The beach was beautiful, as still wasn't very crowded, and the weather was perfect, sunny with a breeze so it wasn't too hot.

I went out to a couple of restaurants with my parents. The last day there my mother's cousin and her husband joined us to have a couple of paellas, the yellow one is paella mixta; with seafood and chicken and the other one is arroz negro; which is black rice cooked with squid ink. On the night of my arrival we had one of my favourite dishes from the area it is sepia troceada; which is medium squid grilled with garlic, parsly and olive oil.:D

Just curious, Marina- does the ink give a distinctive taste to the rice?

Hmmm, delicious! I bet this is a long way from the pre-packaged 'paella' they sell in Holland, and which hasn't even got any saffron in it.
I would love to try the arroz negro.

Definately I don't think it's worth it to have packaged paella.
At some point I'll be podcasting paella, which takes a while to prepare but it's absolutely worth the effort.

Please do! I'd love to give it a try one day. After all, if you can cook risotto, why not paella?

In Holland, they sell all kinds of packaged 'ethnic' meals (Knorr, Honig) and they just don't taste authentic at all even though many people think they do. It's cheap, and that's what seems to count above all.

One of the things I like about countries like Spain, France, Italy etc. is the fact that people take a lot more care in preparing their food; they also seem to spend more money on special ingredients (like saffron, for instance). At least, that's my personal impression. And now I stop before I go on a rant about Dutch stinginess... ;D

P.s.: I don't know how the " ended up on the package...
