View Full Version : Spanish radio recommendations

One thing about Spain I know much less about than I ought to is Spanish radio, especially given that it could provide me with another source of badly needed listening practice. Obviously I've been to the RNE website and have some grasp of the channels and the programmes that are available, but its like a map without contours, I can't get much sense of what is important and interesting and what isn't.

So I thought I'd open this out to the collective wisdom of the NFS forum.

1) Does anybody listen to a particular programme regularly that they would recommend?

2) Are there any particular Spanish radio programmes that over time have become part of the national culture (like the Archers or Desert Island Discs in the UK)?

3) What do people think of Spanish radio in general?

4) Is there a Spanish equivalent of Radio 4 in the UK?

5) Can anyone recommend any good flamenco/latin/world music programmes broadcast on Spanish radio?

Any thoughts on any of these questions welcome.

1) Does anybody listen to a particular programme regularly that they would recommend?.You know I like my dose of football. El Larguero is the late night (for me) football show on Cadena Ser with José Ramón de la Morena which has interviews with players, coaches, presidentes and other journalists. He interviewed Juande Ramos the day after he was hit by the bottle and later spoke to del Nido and de Lopera. The best thing is that each show is split into 3 podcasts which you can download each day (via iTunes) and so I can listen on my way to work.

For music, I like Radio 3 (from RTVE) and Radio Circulo in Madrid. A nice mix of all sorts of styles - jazz, flamenco, classical, blues, experimental music - all sorts. I remember waking up to an electronica version of Blackbird by the Beatles once (I don't remembe which of the two stations it was).

Radio Ecca was started 42 years ago in the Canaries in order to bring education to the remote areas of the islands where accessibility to schools is limited by the geography of the archipielago. Since then it has spread to Spain and with the advent of the internet, to all parts of the spanish speaking world.
The idea was that a small group of school children could assemble in a remote region and follow the state curriculum by listening to the radio along with a tutor or helper.
Now it is possible not only to matriculate but to follow many courses not just for schoolchildren but also for adults wanting further education. Anybody can buy the course material and follow the courses and obtain certification. Just listening to the broadcasts is a learning experience in itself, especially the English classes.
Here you can listen to a program on " Palabras ".

For hearing Spanish in many dialects and at many different speeds I have found RNE5 - todo noticias - to be very good. Short pieces about a variety of topics, spots for music of different types and every half hour the news/weather at breakneck speed. I find it best listened to in bed on earphones so there are fewer distractions (but then I'm getting old;D)

Thanks for all the recommendations :) - I will check all those out. Radio Circulo (http://www.circulobellasartes.com/ag_radio.php) looks like the one that is most my kind of thing - I've just listened to an interesting interview with Mexican singer Lila Downs from the 'Contenidos' section.

Anybody else got any recommendations?

I think I have to listen to that!!!!

My favourite radio host is Gemma Nierga who does La Ventana program (http://www.cadenaser.com/programas.html?anchor=serprolav) in the afternoons in La Cadena Ser (http://www.cadenaser.com/), you can also get her interviews as a podcast in the followig feed (http://www.cadenaser.com/rssaudio/entrevistas.html). Every now and again I also listen to music channels like Cadena 100 (http://www.cadena100.es/) or if I'm in the car and I want to sing old songs I search for Kiss FM (http://www.kissfm.es/web/home.asp).

I'd love to get these podcasts but when I click on the link above (followig feed) I get the error which I've copied below...I wonder whether it might be because the word "following" has a typo?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... It's you that keeps that station going!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, Margot, a mispelling in text won't change a link. It's an XML page, which is a link to a 'feed'. You need a podcast reader or to be using firefox to see them. If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, read the thread about podcasts (there's one here somewhere, I think).

Glad you like it - it's good, isn't it? Sadly I find the link to be quite unstable, I never get a good connection. Looking forward to returning to Madrid one day and getting a proper signal from t'wireless.

Sorry Margot,

They just have created the podcast feeds for La Ventana and they don't seem to work yet, however and until they start publishing the podcasts you can listen to the interviews in your computer in the following link (http://www.cadenaser.com/programas.html?anchor=serprolavfon).

Hola Rhodian,

I highly recommend to listen a very entertaining, well-known show known as La Rosa de los Vientos , a programme broadcasted on Onda Cero radio, which i think it has not been mentioned yet.

The show is hosted by Juan Antonio Cebrián and runs for three hours every weekend between 1 to 4 am.

http://www.ondacero.es/ondacero/GestorWeb?id=10746

You can listen and download previous programmes at http://www.ondacero.es/ondacero/GestorWeb?id=10774
http://www.juanantoniocebrian.com/doc/fonoteca/default.asp

And here you can also find more info: http://www.juanantoniocebrian.com/default.asp
http://www.juanantoniocebrian.com/doc/links/default.asp

They talk about very up-to-date questions as climatic change and also historical events, paranormal phemomena..., and the last hour is about music, premieres, film festivals, etc.

so it would be interesting if you could listen to it and give your opinions here ;):)

Thanks for the recommendation, that all looks very interesting! I look forward to listening to it as soon as I can, but....

An appeal to any techies who might be out there. I often find I can't run various feeds and videos within Firefox, like this one. What happens is an annoying green jigsaw puzzle piece symbol comes up with the line 'Additional Plugins are required to display all the media on this page' and prompts you to click on an 'Install Missing Plugins' button. I click on that and it says 'No suitable plugins were found' and prompts me to manually install an 'unknown plugin'. I click on that and it turns out to be Windows Media Player 11, which of course I already have on my computer. Reinstalling doesn't solve the problem - Firefox just doesn't seem to make the connection between the media content of some webpages and the plugins that I know I already have installed. This doesn't happen to me with all media content, YouTube works fine for example, but just some sites. Is there a menu setting I have to change? It is very frustrating, I don't want to have to go back to Internet Explorer.

Rod you could try looking through Firefox online help. Something here (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_plugins)may ring a bell!
I've had similar problems but can't remember how I got out of them:blush:

The two great rivals are the SER (part of the Polanco media empire and, of course, rabidly socialist) and the COPE.
The COPE is right wing catholic (but not necessarily PP). The station is owned by the Spanish synod of Bishops and is listened to by conservatives and - apparantly, little old people who visit our town as part of the Inserso (old people's tours). The most famous journalist is Federico Jiménez Losantos who says truly dreadful things about Zapatero and the trend towards the left in general. His daily show is piped in from Madrid.
I work in the local COPE station and sometimes receive visits from the aforementioned little old parejas down for a few days.
Buenos días. They look up at me in horror. I'm rather obviously not Spanish. Is this the COPE?
Indeed yes.
Is Don Federico here?
Er, no. He's just stepped out for a glass of vitriol.

I don't know much about timetables but my preferred stations are KISS FM and M 80 radio. The music is a good mix bbut there is not much conversation.
