I lived in Spain for a couple of months and was able to see a lot of amazing architecture from Gaudi to muslim mosques to castles and cathedrals. There is a rich histoty of different cultures living in Spain. Some cultures left very few traces of their time on the peninsula while others left great legacies.

Perhaps some interesting things to look into are the roman bridges and acqueducts, the muslim mosques, the cave paintings in Altamira.

Or there is always plenty to learn about the Spanish civil wars that lead to the dictatorhips of Francisco Franco from around 1939 to 1975. You can look into how his policies affected the country. That would most definitely be at least a 30 minute presentation.

The creation of a democracy after Franco's death with el Rey Juan Carlos can also be a starting point.

I did a paper on the Basque Country and ETA during my studies.

If you are interested in art history: Picasso, Dali, Velazquez, Goya
The museums of Madrid: El Prado, El Reina Sofia, Thyssen

The Catholic Kings and the Reconquest along with the journeys to the New World.

You could talk about the four official languages of Spain or the different regions of Spain. The list could go on forever. I am sure that you will find plenty of information on whatever topic you choose!!;D

I think the starting point should be before Francos ascent to power. It would give an insight into how it occurred, and the Spanish attitude towards conflict (past and present). I often wonder what the Spanish reaction would be if Al Queda were to embark with a vengeance on their stated objective to reconquer Andalucia.

awesome! thanks for the great suggestions

I am an art history/spanish double major, but i dont think the person i am working with will be into art history.

but i think a presentation on the franco era would be fascinating!

or the history of the iberian peninsula would defintiely be a good place to start. thanks a ton!

Don't suppose you'd be too excited at the history of football (soccer) in Spain? It took a good 30 minutes but it was so long ago that I used OHP (pre-Powerpoint).

You could probably do a 30 minute presentation just on the capital cities of each province and how each province came to be.
