I'll second that vote for Giles Tremlett's Ghosts of Spain. I'm about half way through and it's very interesting and well written. There are threads dealing with books already. Try this one (http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87&highlight=books) for starters.

I thought Ghosts of Spain was pretty good though the style became a bit repetitive.

John Hooper, The New Spaniards, I liked, when I first read it (which was probably about 15 years ago!!) but it looks as though there has been an update. Worth hunting out some reviews.

Some of the GCSE background text books from the UK were good too.

El Otro Arbol de Guernica es really good... very nice character relations and themes!

I read it about 2 months ago and someone told me it's quite a popular read among younger people around that area (Bilbao). Sounds like they are brought up on it! Very interesting.
