So today I got settled into my digs just off Ronda de San Antoni. Being an aging geek I removed my PowerBook and proceded to type away (no open wifi:() . Sure as eggs is eggs after a couple of hours the battery died so I went for the power supply  It was still in England. Now I have a CV and letter af application to write whilst I am away so I needed a workround to get the stuff I had alreadt done on to a flash drive so that I could continue in an internet cafe. I went to PC City but no Macs - they pointed me to Corte Inglés and FNAC at Cataluña. I thought "FNACs full of hip young dudes in tshirts with long hair - that'll be tha place. No chance - turned down flat. With a heavy heart I plodded across the plaza to Corte Inglés. Up to the seventh floor, took one look at the men in suits and almost turned away. Still, I thought I'd give it a pitch. Begged the three guys at the laptop counter and presto - helpyourself to power gary do what you need to do before our gaffer comes back.

Guess where I´ll shop from now on!!:)

El Corte Inglés is a true monopoly in Spain. It's unfortunate. I'd love to see what would happen if some other big box retailers existed in Spain other than El Corte Inglés and Carrefour. The Spanish have no idea what they're missing. Whole Foods and Target, anyone? [Whole Foods and Target are two excellent U.S. retailers that I miss whenever I'm in Spain for any length of time.]

Hi Gary,

I see that you've only been in Barcelona for a couple of days and you are already like a local:D

What does that say about the locals, then?

Nope. Only El Corte Inglés all the time, every time. In Madrid, there seems to be a Corte Inglés every 100 meters. Just kidding. Not. The service sucks (hey, would it kill the checkout clerk to help bag the groceries once in a while?) and the prices are ridiculously high for basic items (more than 5 euros for a package of toilet paper?!). But because they've got a monopoly, they don't have to be affordable. :(

That seems to mirror my experience. I always expect to see young Mr Grace appear from one of the lifts. The staff are generally arrogant although things have got a little better. Anyway, I'll use FNAC wherever possible.

Grammar Checker works fine....

No Tesco
No Tescas
No Tesca
No Tescamos
No Tecais
No Tescan

But the spllehceckre is knackered

UPDATE - had a panic that tescar might not be a verb to conjugate in public - checked and it doesnt exist , so Ill define it as the english method if filling the fridge
