Even if you don't like this website's political orientation, there are lots of interesting documentaries to watch, like this one on Spanish women before, during and after the civil war:

http://www.enlacesocialista.org.mx/pagina-mujeres-del-36.html

Originally, it was broadcast by TVE.

thanks Edith to promote other culture and story. I'm Spanish and there are some things that can't never happen again, like Spanish Civil War!

Kanana,

that can't never happen again,

Just to be picky - you can't have 'can't never'. This is a double negative in English. You could have 'can never' or 'can't ever'. :thumbs-up:

Kanana,

Hola Kanana,

So true! Many Europeans tend to forget about the Spanish Civil War because of World War II, without realizing how tragic this era must have been for the Spanish people.

On a side note: normally I don't really like telenovelas but I admit I'm hooked to 'Amor en tiempos revueltos', which is situated in Madrid during the early posguerra. Apart from being a love story, the series is also about ordinary Spanish people and about their efforts to recuperate from the war's aftermath.

Thanks Edith for that clip. Unfortunatelythe sound was quite fuzzy. I'd love to know how you access the telenovela you mentioned. We have Sky; can I :oget it through this?

;D

That's why I always put on headphones. :D They really do work for me, because headsets really help to enhance sound quality. I have also got a headset to watch TVE.

I'm afraid not; this series is broadcast by TVE 24 Horas. I have been watching it for about one and a half years now (with headphones! ;)) and my listening skills have really improved as a result, albeit at a snail's pace. ;D

I think this "telenovela" is a good story and, as well, a good way to know a little bit more our history. If you like this kind of "series", try to find "Cuentame comp paso". You will learn more Spanish and more things of causes of Spanish Civil War.
Go to http://www.cuentamecomopaso.net to guess more about this serie.

Bye,
kanana.

Oh, but I'm a great 'Cuéntame' fan already! :thumbs-up: I have got the three first seasons on DVD and I'm eagerly awaiting the other episodes, but so far they haven't launched any new ones.

The nice thing about DVDs is, you can replay all the dialogues if you miss something.

Kanana,

Regrettably, the societal wounds caused by La Guerra Civil will not heal permanently until Spanish society faces up to the horrors committed on both sides, honour the dead and wounded of both sides and seek a reconciliation today similar to that of the post-Apartheid process.

The "Pact of Silence" has not cured the hurt caused, merely placed a Band-Aid over still painful places.

I completely agree with you, but I think that with soup operas, series, forums, whatever, we can help to destroy this "Pact of Silence".
What happen is that most of politicians aren't interested in repairing all the mistakes. But society can think and act by itself.

Giles Tremlett discusses this thorny issue in his book 'Ghosts of Spain':

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ghosts-Spain-Travels-Through-Countrys/dp/057122167X

Tremlett's observations have really enlightened me as far as Spain's historical dilemmas are concerned. I really hope the past will not keep haunting the Spanish people for generations to come.

Of course, Spain is not alone in this. Many countries - including my own - have been through painful episodes in the past, a fact which is usually denied or trivialized by people of a more nationalist bent. Facing the truth is a frightening prospect for those who always believe in 'my country right or wrong'.

@ Juanjo

I agree, South Africa's 'Truth and Reconciliation Commission' should be an example to us all. Of course, atrocities were committed by both sides like in most wars, but let's not forget that the Republicans have paid the highest price possible. Apart from facing imprisonment, persecution, disenfranchisement and poverty for several decades, they were completely silenced by Franco. Their children also suffered the consequences.

Edith - where are you finding these telenovelas? I have TVE on my cable, but I don't see them listed. I would love to watch these shows. What a great learning tool! I learned how to speak real English by watching East Enders for 20 years.

I keep hearing about this "cuentame como pasó" as a splendidly watchable series, but it´s pretty much unbuyable and unrentable here in the US, even in Seattle, where we have good foreign DVD rental opportunities. It´s not even stealable, unfortunately, at least it doesn´t show up on the peer-to-peer download sites I am familiar with, such as "thepiratebay.org". I wish Spaniards weren´t so darned behind the times in this respect. As Ben has pointed out, there's no Spanish Amazon, and FNAC strikes me as utterly unfriendly and extortionate in dealing with foreign buyers. One imagines some sort of oxcart-tramp steamer delivery system, with greedy and corrupt customs officials. Something like my childhood experiences in Thailand, where one had to bargain with customs officials to ransom one´s overseas packages.

there are a couple on Spanish eBay (http://cine-dvd-peliculas.search-desc.ebay.es/cuentame_Series-de-TV_W0QQcatrefZC6QQfclZ3QQfgtpZQQfposZCQf3digoQ20po sQQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQftsZ2Q Qga10244Z10425QQlopgZQQsabfmtsZ1QQsacatZ124094QQsa disZ200QQsaobfmtsZinsifQQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsargn ZQ2d1QQsaslcZ1QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbs)- series 1.
Also this site (http://www.mercamania.es/s/mot/Cu%E9ntame_c%F3mo_pas%F3) looks promising but I haven't dealt with them (mercamania.es) & they quote in $ so should ship happily to you.

I can understand your frustration! Unfortunately, this problem affects prospective buyers on both sides of the Arlantic; I'm interested in a documentary series called 'The Desert Speaks' by David Yetman, but it's impossible for me to buy the DVDs here in Holland! Even Amsterdam's only American bookstore couldn't help me; they are not allowed to sell the DVDs here - they are very nice people and I know it's not their fault. But whoever is profiting from this should be drawn and quartered. So annoying... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

:D:D:D

'Amor en tiempos revueltos' is broadcast every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 15.50 until 17.30. I discovered this telenovela by sheer coincidence!

The Casema website has a special Programmagids for all their channels (click on the book icons to view):

http://www.casema.nl/pagina/thuis/radioentelevisie/rtvdigitaal/pakketten

I haven't seem 'Cuéntame como pasó' for a while though.
