NIS Inspired Beginners 10 - Este mes

(What good timing! We just learnt about the Present Perfect over the last week and a bit in class. It's really helped clarify a lot of things I didn't understand well before.)

Bueno, es invierno acá en Australia...

He tenido un invierno interesante. Después de terminar mi último examen, he ido a Perú de viaje por segunda vez. Allá he viajado unos diez días con mi madre a Trujillo y Chiclayo, donde hemos visto muchos sitios arqueológicos. Después, he ido solo a Huaraz, donde he hecho caminatas por las montañas bonitas. Mi madre ha viajado con un grupo de gringos a los sitios de Perú que ya he visitado. Por eso he podido viajar solo.

Después de terminar en las montañas, he tenido la suerte de viajar con una buena amiga limeña que conocí en mi primer viaje por Perú. Hemos ido a Cusco donde hemos visitado a unos amigos. Es una ciudad linda y la hemos disfrutado mucho.


Este mes he tenido mucha suerte. He conseguido trabajo en un banco de inversiones para las vacaciones de verano. Aunque me alegra mucho de haber conseguido ese puesto, me he dado cuenta de que no voy a poder viajar por el verano. No sé cuándo volveré a viajar. Y eso me molesta.


A few grammar questions:
Is it fine to use a "después de INFINITIVE" structure before going on to the Present Perfect like I have a few times in this post?
"los sitios de Perú". Was I right to use "de" or should it have been "del"? When exactly do you use the definite article in front of a country's name in Spanish?
"No sé cuándo volveré a viajar". What is the rule for using accents in interrogatives like "cuándo" or "cuál" outside of an actual question like in this example?Was anything about my post not structured in a natural way? Any suggestions on how to improve my grammar. Cheers in advance. :-)

Este mes he trabajado mientras todo el mundo se ha ido de sus vacaciones. Este mes me he mudado, pero todavía no he conocido a todas mis compañeras de piso.

Este mes he escrito una lista de todas las cosas que tengo que hacer. No he hecho muchas de ellas.

Esta semana han empezado mis vacaciones. He quedado con unos amigos y iremos al parque de Montseny. Mañana en la mañana iré a la playa para tomar un café y leer un libro que he sacado de la biblioteca.

Por fin una amiga mía me ha llamado y hemos quedado la semana que viene. Ha estado en Portugal y lo ha pasado muy bien.
Bueno, he terminado mis deberes.

See the extract below. Bit more homework for you to translate it :) although it is fairly straightforward Spanish.

From "Gramática y Dudas del Español":

De los nombres propios de lugares, van sin artículo los nombres de continentes, los nombres de países, los de regiones, islas o ciudades. No es correcto entonces decir la Francia o la Italia. Sin embargo, algunos de ellos lo llevan siempre:
La Haya. La Bañeza, El Salvador, La Mancha.
En estos casos el artículo se escribe con letra inicial mayúscula.
...
Si el artículo forma parte e un nombre propio no se produce la contracción:
Iremos de vacaciones a El Cairo. Vienen de El Ejido.
....

Algunos nombres propios de lugar admiten la alternancia:
Perú / El Perú : China / La China

Como ocurría con los nombres propios de persona, los que van acompañados de adjetivos pueden llevar artículo:
la Rusia comunista, el León gótico

Los nombres de ríos, mares, montes, etc. también pueden llevar artículo:
el Duero, el Everest, el Mediterráneo

Thanks, I have all sorts of weird gaps in my knowledge due to the odd way I have studied over the years. Hence the basic podcasts are veryuseful for me to fill in a few gaps.

Cheers for that. I didn't realize that it was a country-specific rule. I thought that there must have been some grammar rule that I hadn't found for when to use the definite article in front of a country's name.

In Perú they seem to use "en" as much if not more than "por" in sentences like "mañana por la tarde" or "ayer por la mañana". I think it may be a Latin American thing in general.

My Spanish teacher (from Barcelona) picked me up on it last semester though and told me to use "por" instead. :p

I'm just setting up my ipod again beginners 8, 9 and 10 did not download throough itunes (the network connection timed out) -I tried last night and just now.

You had a problem with Itunes. That's why I said it. I download all the podcasts via Juice. Never had a problem. I will admit that Itunes is intuitive to use and the Juice needs you to find and input URLs, but it works well. And it doesn't keep directing you to a shop!!!!!!

OK Sir Richard. I mentioned it to Ben as I thought the problem might be his end.

A lot of the podcasts I subscribe to I discovered on itunes and I can manage all my ipod stuff from from one place so is probably better for me but I'll take a look.

My verb tables give "we have been as ... 'hemos sido'"

Is this just a dropping of the "s" for flow, a typo, or a misunderstanding on my part?

But they are not saying "We have been ...." They are saying "We went ..."

Right. Ir. I see the problem. They are translating it as "we've been" when what they mean is "we have gone". I was thus looking at Ser not Ir.

La pérdida del artículo delante del nombre de países o continentes es reciente (desde mediados del siglo XIX) pero algunos países se han resistido a perderlo del todo: el Perú, la Argentina, la China, el Japón...
aunque en España la tendencia actual es escribir este artículo con minúscula.
