Hard drive failure

After my hard drive failure I'm trying to pick up the pieces. I have lost itunes but still have the stuff on my ipod. There seem to be (non apple approved) applications that will load from ipod back to itunes. I tried one and it didn't work and couldn't 'see' my ipod. Has anyone found/used one of these that worked ?

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me last year. I contacted Apple support and somehow I was able to get back my iTunes library, stuff that I had purchased from iTunes. Is your entire iPod loaded with iTunes stuff or does it have non-iTunes music?

It's a complete hotchpoch (is that how one spells it?) from the itunes store I've tons of podcasts: not a big deal as they are free and can be reloaded, but the other stuff is a mixture of stuff from my record collection, stuff from the library (that has in some cases been converted from analogue sources)-so a real pain to get back-copying direct from the ipod would be preferable.;)

you can do this with the program winamp. Just do a google search of winamp and itunes or ipod/

I don´t have any experiences with these programs, Tad, but good luck. And after you get your iTunes back, buy an extra hard drive to back them up.

Worth a try - specialist data recovery might get it back but its a case of weighing the cost against the inconvenience...

And after you get your iTunes back, buy an extra hard drive to back them up

Informative as ever. Similiar to smörgåsborg from the Swedish, although this is more food based rather than a mixture of any old stuff-a tasty selection In google I found a thread headed

Thanks, I'll investigate the above suggestions. Getting an external hard-drive is a must for everyone (he says now), the sad thing is I had bought one 2 weeks previously and hadn't got round to plugging it in. Most of the stuff I had I can get back hopefully and I did put stuff on a disc 14 months ago so the only really upsetting thing was the photos- and so easy to stick these on a CD-ROM

Some stuff was recovered (a few episodes of LOST;D;D ) and the pilot edition of Tad's really interesting filmgame.:clap:

Tad...don't worry. The very same thing happened to me and it was very easy to transfer all my files from my iPod to my computer! I think I used Poster, but I can't remember for sure. If you the above doesn't work, let me know and I'll figure out what program I used. I do remember it cost about $5 or something like that.

I purchased this recently for backup http://www.drobo.com/

It's a device that lets you put in 4 SATA hard drives (up to 1TB each drive) but it only comes up as 1 drive on your computer. It also automatically saves your files so if 1 drive dies you can replace it without losing any files. It's along the same lines as RAID but you don't have to configure anythjing. Works right out of the box. Yes it is pretty expensive but after losing a ton of data on some other external hard drives it was my only choice!!

Thanks Molly I used it and it seems to have worked fine (21 tracks didn't make it, but appropriately, 12 of those were from Mozart's requiem)

Although it is possible to use this for free I paid the £10 as otherwise when copying, every 50 tracks it stops and asks you to consider paying; and I had 3800 odd tracks- all in all though well worth the £10.

Havn't had a listen yet , but I subscribed to your podcasts- so looking forward to those and to catching up with some of the regular ones I missed whilst wandering in the cyber-wilderness.

I had to reload the stuff because I'd doubled up some of the tracks. Just in case anyone was following this thread PodUtil seems to have metamorphasised into MusicRescue (http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/musicrescue/) and I think this is the most up-to-date software version.

Or get Ivan to get the clever Chinese kid on the case, I don't know what he did but he fixed it for £50 all my pics +all three series of LOST-life just keeps getting better:)
