Does anyone know the legality of buying a bit of land and living on it in a truck, caravan or yurt? is it like in the UK, where the council will evict you without planning permission or is it more laid back?
Thanks everyone.

Don't know what the law is - mostly they are similar to UK. This forum (http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/forum/viewthread/1325/) has a little on mobile homes - you could search for similar, also wooden chalets have been causing people problems if they don't have planning and building permits. Note that you need a certificate of habitation to get an electricity/water supply connected.
Even land with a ruin is no guarantee you can use it to live on. Best get legal advice before you buy.

Some good advice given above...and be aware that each community, maybe each concello will have different laws. Maybe you should approach the mayor of the area before you do anything...go straight to the top!!!!

What is a yurt? The word yurt is originally from the Turkic word meaning "dwelling place" in the sense of "homeland"; the term came to be used in reference to the physical tent-like structures only in other languages. (Wikipedia)
