Just having a surf and came across this site (http://www.fuenterrebollo.com/recuerdos/pentimento.html)of old photographs of Madrid. For those of us that know the city today, these are quite fascinating.

Sir Richard, they are great. I liked the 1965 one of Puerta del Sol with the bear before it was moved over to the side.

In which case, you might be interested in the book "Los Viejos Cafés de Madrid" by Ángel del Río López(2003), isbn 84-95889-46-3. As the title suggest it is a study of the history of Madrid's cafés and café society from the late 19th century to recent times with lots of ddescriptions, anecdotes and photos.
