¡Hola!
¡Gracias!

Hello!
I just created an account with Skype, however, I do not have a webcam. I know that it isn't necessary to have one in order to utilize the program, but I would like to buy one anyways. The only thing is that there are so many models that I am lost. If you have one that you like, I would appreciate your suggestion.
Thanks!

Hi,
I've never owned one but have a look on the skype site to see what they recommend (http://accessories.skype.com/section?SID=e2616d40a55ed24ce896743fff8ffd7134f:45 65&secid=39161)... could be worth a try. Look at recommendations in Amazon as well to see what others say before buying. I think you probably don't have to spend more than $30...

When we set up out intranet there was a sudden, though short lived, craze for webcams. So we have about 25 or 30 of all different shapes, sizes and makes - and guess what? They all worked as good as any other. The cheapest as well as the most expensive. Resolution didn't seem to be a problem. Especially so as usually it was just a small pic in the corner of the screen. Moral, don't go spending a fortune.

Depending upon connection speeds webcam images can be disappointing - for Skype the most important thing is the headset to stop the horrific howlround that you get if yo use speakers!
Incidentally - have spent an hour on Viajeros Breeze meeting room tonight - it works really well once you get used to the small delay inherrent in the system - video and audio worked a treat - sadly my intercambio was with a non spanish speaking scouser friend who is clucking about his up coming entry into teaching - I thank god an looking forward to my up coming exit

Retiring? I exited teaching after only 6 years of it and that was a big enough releif in itself!!!

Exactly. I bought a $40 Intel PC Camera 7 years ago, and it still serves me well. It seems that most webcam streams are either 160x120 or at the very most, 320x240, anyway, so anything boasting better resolution won't provide satisfying results over a broadband connection.

I have not tried many cameras but my Logitech seems to work fine. Just an annoying button on the top so every time I move it I take a still picture!
I did find that cheap microphones are not a good investment. Look for one with noise cancelling capability. Since getting one of those (Labtec), sound quality on Skype is much better.

I definitely agree with Gary. If you're going to do any internet chatting, a headset with an attached microphone is the way to go, to avoid the dreaded feedback. (Really, you English types call it howlaround?). :o

Its an archane alternative - 'feedback' is more common....

Its bearable at the mo - I usually do a little consultancy for IT use in the classrooms in primary schools, a little supply teaching, one or two other projects earn a quid or two - but I took on a one term contract to help out a friend and it turned into a year.
The teachings ok and the kids are great - its going to the same place day after day that does my head in - but you have to weigh that against steady money. There will come a time when the wanderlust is more powerful than the tug of the dosh and it'll be 'have chalk will travel-
