I run Rosetta@home, and you can find more information about it at http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ . The aim is to use spare computer power to fold proteins and come up with cures to many diseases. I won't pretend to be an expert on this one, but it seems to be a very good cause. And any results that are obtained from this are released to the world for free. Seems to be a good idea to me.

What do you do with yours? If you do nothing or you're spending your cycles searching for aliens, will you join Rosetta@home? There could even be a Notesfromspain team :)

I'm up and running. Don't think I will ever understand what it is actually doing but it is geeky enough to interest me. It's certainly got the processor working hard already.

Yeah, it only uses spare cycles though, so you shouldn't notice your computer running any slower. And I don't understand it either - leave that to the scientists who write the software :)

If this WSJ article on SETI (http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB115145653496392561-3YTEjOQhd0ZilADHfEf8hoK4BhA_20070628.html?mod=blog s) is to be believed searching for aliens is a complete waste of time. So far better to contribute to something like Rosetta.
