Spain's first high-speed rail link between Madrid and Barcelona has become operational, after years of delay.
Hitting speeds of 300km/h (186mph), the first AVE train took 155 minutes to cover the 550km (342 miles) to Madrid.
A total of 17 trains - each expected to carry some 200 people - will now be operating daily between the two cities.
At a price of some 180 euros (£136) return, the new train link competes favourably with air travel, the BBC's Danny Wood in Madrid says.
The added advantage is that the train takes passengers right into the heart of Madrid, our correspondent says.

"I think it was an excellent trip from Barcelona," one of the AVE passengers told the BBC.
The service is operated by Spain's national train company Renfe.
The high-speed link between the country's two biggest cities was planned nearly two decades ago, but its completion was delayed by a number of administrative and construction issues.
Spain's first high-speed train line - between Madrid and Seville - opened in 1992.
The Spanish government now says it will have more high-speed train lines than anywhere else in the world by 2010, our correspondent says.

http://www.renfe.es/ not very cheap, you can check out the tix here

Question: how much is the slower train? Or has that been abolished?

This is hilarious, the quote from another article (http://www.facebook.com/share_redirect.php?h=9ce207492ea3a4e884774aeb0762d 19f&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.bbc.co.uk%2F2%2Fhi%2Feurope% 2F7254630.stm&sid=10590225810)

Go to vueling or any other budget airline and find return flights for 40euros...it's a JOKE! Why would you over price this service with air travel being so cheap???

It's actually quite clever pricing by Renfe - if you go on their web-site you can pay a lot cheaper. This way they earn money from tourists who want to see the landscape as they travel between the 2 cities.
One thing you have to factor into a flight cost (especially for an early start) is the taxi fare to the airport.

Do you think the Madrid-Valencia AVE run will be up by 2010?

I just looked on vueling and they have a 50 euro return (middle of may. From Madrid airport it's either a couple of euros on bus/metro (an hour to Sol?) or a taxi for between 20 and 25? Say the same for Barcelona, thats 100 euros.

I can't book that far ahead with renfe, but for similar date in April, it's 162 euros.

It may take a bit longer flying, but if you're going to save atleast 60 euros and you're not in a rush, it's still better to fly. Maybe the renfe will get a bit cheaper in the future or have special promotions.

It may attract business passengers though as the price difference isn't much for them and it may be alot less hassle to take and work on the train.

Yeh I agree with switch, business people are probably going to be the ones who get into this. Less hassle.
