while everybody is busy with the world cup, the Italians have bought a Catalan national treasure. The maker of world famous Chupa Chups (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupa_Chups) lollipops has been acquired by Italian company Perfetti Van Melle. The price is quoted at around 400million, which, as we say, is a lot of lolly!
The story in La vanguardia is here (http://www.lavanguardia.es/lv24h/20060703/51275391605.html).
In the last few years Spanėsh companies have been snapping up foreign assets. The most recent including the purchase of British mobile phone network O2 by Telefonica and the purchase of British airports (including Heathrow Airport) by Ferrovial. This phenomenon has been nicknamed the "Spanish Acquisition". Is this the first sign of some activity in the reverse direction? My guess is that the Spanish governement don't consider this a strategic asset?
One other interesting fact, the logo for Chupa Chups was designed by Salvador Dali (see the earlier Wikipedia link for an example).
