What's with the post office? I've had 4 packages from abroad (US and UK) never arrive. Do they just not care whether things get delivered? Does someone pilfer the packages? I don't recall seeing the "postal disservice" on the list of "worst things about Spain," but i find it very frustrating.
The cartero is nice, though...

There seems to be quite a lot of wrongly addressed mail or the post(wo)man puts it in the wrong box. I usually try and work it out and put it in the right place but I don't think all the residents in our block do - the garbage bag is easier  or it's thrown on the ground.

It's a hassle but you've got 2 options: Have items shipped via Fedex, DHL or UPS or have someone from the U.S. or the U.K. personally bring stuff for you when they come to visit. Yeah, I know. Not the most ideal options but 100% guaranteed that you will receive your package, and if you don't, you will be able to pinpoint exactly where it went missing. Fedex costs an arm and a leg for international delivery but damn are they good.
It sounds like something (or someone) is "misplacing" your packages. Have you filed a report with the local post office? One missing package could be excused. Two missing packages sounds like bad luck. But FOUR missing packages sent to the same address? That's not bad luck or poor service but a possible thief working in the delivery system. File a complaint. Even though it won't get your packages back, it will at least give Correos some kind of paper trail that one day, probably 10 years from now, someone working at the Valencia post office will connect the dots and realize that they've got a bad seed working for them.
The people who sent you the packages, did they send them insured?

One option if this is a real problem is to get a post box in the local post office or with one of the private companies that supply them. Some of our friends do this because the Correos don't deliver very often / at all to outlying areas. At least that rules out los vecinos or casual thieves that can easily lift things from an apartment box.
