Any recommendations for a hostal in Malaga? I'm looking for something in the budget range (shared bath is fine) but not too scruffy — my mom will be staying there.;)

Thanks!

Try the Pension Rosa No 10 calle Martinez on 952 212716.

They don`t have a web site, there only one star accomodation, but cheap and clean.

They may only speak Castellano though.

Hostal type accomadations are called Pension in Spain, try google but many are too small and cheap to bother with the net.

Thanks for your help, Zuri. We wound up staying at the Hostal Derby, which I would recommend. It was clean and comfortable, and it's in a great central location, near the intersection of the Alameda Principal and Marques de Larios. A double without bath was 40 euros.

Thats a great area to stay if you ever come at xmas time.

Did you visit a bar whilst in Av Alameda, can`t remember its name, its on the left corner if you travel from Corte Ingles towards the port.

It`s one of the oldest in Spain, every drink is served from barrels as they did a centuary ago.

I think the place you're thinking of is Antigua Casa de Guardia. Ben mentions it in his excellent post about Things to do in Malaga (http://www.notesfromspain.com/2007/08/13/things-to-do-in-malaga/). Alas, we didn't make it over there, but I did gorge myself on fried almonds, eat lots of lovely seafood and a few too many cones of turrón ice cream at Casa Mira (YUM!).

It is a fine place, central, clean enough, and cheap! Glad you enjoyed Malaga!

Ben's got it. Sorry, I meant to include the contact info in my post above!

I should add that we had a bit of trouble finding the place, as it's on a small, short side street. If you have trouble, look for the McDonald's that faces the Alameda/Plaza de la Marina; the Derby is on the little street that runs to the side of the McDonald's.
