Hi all

I am looking for some advice on somewhere to spend our holiday in Spain. There is a complication as my son has cerebral palsy so we need to find somewhere that isn't hilly.

We like relaxing by the pool but also visiting stunning scenery (amateur photographer).

If anyone has ideas for places, hotels etc on the main land or islands then we would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

When our four sons were small we used to go to Fuengirola (Hotel Angela right on the beach)- cheap and cheerful and child friendly. Photogenic places (e.g. Mijas) and child-orientated entertainment venues within easy car ride.

Later in life, we had to cater for young grandchildren (including two autistic ones), so we used to hire a villa in San Pedro de Alcántara. Not only did it have an enclosed pool with a locked door (safety!) but also was enclosed by walls (so the autistic ones could not escape as they are very adept at doing!.) Great holidays enjoyed by all!

Don`t go Southern Spain, there idea of catering for Disability is far from ideal.

Also I have friends who`s son has Spinal problems, he constantly gets looks from people in the street, it makes my wife cringe and ashamed to be Spanish.Coming from the UK with a disabled father it really shocked me how people would stare so openly.

My father is in a wheel chair, we live in Malaga, when he used to visit, using the wheel chair in the street was ok, but the facillites on the beaches are non excistant.

The costa brava area has tends to cater better than the South, he was able to use a special chair on the beach which would allow him to enter the water and swim etc etc without any difficulties.

Personally if I were you I`d contact a specialist travel agent for advice on locations within Spain.

I think Corralejo is an ideal place. The Atlantic Ocean’s waves provide the sea, and as for the sand, Corralejo is known for its imposing dunes. Apart from this Costa Calma, Costa Teguise are also worth seeing.

You could do worse than Benidorm - dont believe everything you hear from the nay sayers - there are 6 miles of flat promenade and access to the hotels that are not on the front is up a very gentle slope, especially in Playa Levante, (avoid the South end of the resort neat Finestrat cos its mountain goat country!!)
As so many elderly folk holiday there they are often geared up for wheelchairs, scooters etc.
There is wheelchair access to the beach...
Trips out to places like Villa Joyosa, Guadalest and the Fountains of Agadir should provide photo opportunities.

I agree with gary, Benirdorm isn`t as bad as the Brit media portray, my Spanish In laws returned from there a few months ago, they visit every year.

There are still many places that retain Spanish tourists, but as a brit you`d have the security if you need help, that might be difficult in a more traditional Spanish resort.

My parents also visit there regularly, my father has been wheel chair bound for 10 years now and finds the facilities better than other places in Spain, its the only place he gets to swim as the beaches provide special wheel chairs that ride over the sand and into the sea and they have people to help you do this.
