And all these years I have been mistakenly saying "bottle" when it appears it should be "boddle".:)

And all these years I have been mistakenly saying "bottle" when it appears it should be "boddle".:)My sister has just spent 2 months in New York. She told me that she walked into a store to buy some butter. When she asked where it was the lady at the till/checkout could not understand her, thinking she wanted pasta. Finally by sister said, 'I want some budder'... and till lady said 'why didn't you say so in the first place!'
A week later she was looking for Citybank. Same problem, blank looks from people she asked, until she said 'CiDDybank'! Seems pretty weird that the British accent (and my sister speaks the good old Oxford Queen's English) should be so undecipherable!
EDIT: I would like to add that this is by no means a reflection on the intelligence of the American public, I think she just got unlucky!

Like us, she makes the mistake of pronouncing a "T" as a "T" and not a "D"!:)

EDIT: I would like to add that this is by no means a reflection on the intelligence of the American public, I think she just got unlucky!I don't think it's your pronounciation of the letter T that throws off some americans, as much as it is your pronounciation of words that end in er. To hear something pronounced as "buttah" without context can be a litttle challenging for some. The Citibank bit is admittedly weird. It isn't like we haven't been exposed to the british accent, between the beatles, james bond, monty python, c3po and harry potter (pottuh:rolleyes:).
