All,

I have a study abroad issue I would love some input on...

I have narrowed my study abroad options to three places. I decided that I really want to make it a spot in northern spain as everything I've read about Galicia/Asturias/basque country/cantabria etc. just fascinates me. One good thing about studying there is the tiny percentage of Americans that know of it, and hopefully a lesser percentage of foreigners.

So my choices have come down to the University of the Basque Country in San Sebastian, Univesity of Segovia and the University of Santiago de Compostela. Both programs are through reputable organizations and have comparable costs, both offer classes that I can get credit for, and in both situations I'll be sharing an apartment with spaniards. So it boils down to which city would be the best. I want a place with a lot of history, TONS of possible outdoor activities, good food, and a good nightlife ( I will be there in the fall). I would really like to hear experiences from either places- goods/bads etc.

Also as a side note, I'll be studying in Costa Rica for a couple months of the summer before my semester begins in Spain. Does anyone know how distinct of a difference in the language there is? (I know...it's a random question)

THANKS SO MUCH!!

Derek

Wow, what a great decision you'll have to make! :)

I've never been to San Sebastian or Santiago de Compostela, but I do remember Segovia as being charming and typically Spanish.

It's also more centrally located, not far from Madrid, so that travel might be quicker to southern destinations.

Whatever you decide, I know that you'll have a great time. :thumbs-up:

Hi Roadrunner,

The people who go there are probably not your average tourist anyway... I bet they are the kind of people who would like to know more about the real Spain, la Espaņa profunda.

BTW, lucky you! Traveling abroad is such an enriching experience - have fun and keep an open mind! :)

You asked about Costa Rican Spanish. Here is an interview with Oscar Arias, former president of Costa Rica and a Nobel Prize laureate:

Personally I love San Sebastian, so that might not be a bad idea.

I also would recommend San Sebastian. The Basque Country offers much diversity with food, adventuires, etc.

Everything you ask for above is ready and waiting for you in San Sebastian - it's the city that pursuaded me to move to Spain, and my favourite anywhere in the world. Great nightlife, great people, incredible food, loads of outdoor activities both in-land and on the water. Highly highly recommended.

Santiago de Compostela is also a great city and you can discover all of Galicia which is stunning. However it would be good to check the rain quantities, i think they are more than even San Sebastian which is quite rainy it self.

If you are still considering Santiago de Compostela, you might find this web helpful:

A Brit's opinion on Galicia after 5 (maybe more) years living in Pontevedra.
(not very nicely designed, but does the job)
