1. Take part in a local village fiesta.
The local fiestas are mostly religious in nature, but that doesnt mean that they aren't a lot of fun. The colorful processions are worth it in themselves, and the parties usually go on throughout the night.

2. Experience Gaudi's Barcelona.
Of all the buildings in Barcelona that Antoni Gaudi designed, no visit is more spectacular than Parc Guell. The large park has numerous buildings and sculptures featuring Gaudi's well known broken tile style, and elegant organic curves.

3. Do tapas!
It is one of the Best and most uniquely Spanish things to sit in a bar in the evening and eat tapas while you have a drink.

4. Sit outside in a cafe and watch the world go by!
Spain's villages, towns and cities all have numerous cafe's when you can sit outside, enjoy a coffee and simply watch the world passing by. It is made all the better by the weather which is usually fine.

5. Visit the Alhambra in Granada.
This moorish fortified palace is absolutely incredible. The complex is vast and occupies a large portion of the city centre, so make sure you have a whole day to explore it.

I agree. While I enjoy seeing all of the beautiful sites in Spain, I get the greatest pleasure from sitting at a cafe and watching the Spanish world go by.

I suggest that is the same in most places in the world even London in the right weather..

The only way I could bear shopping with my wife in Paris was for her to leave me reading the paper, having a coffee/drink and watching the world go by in one of the delightful pavement cafés while she rushed around in a buying frenzy. Civilised!;)

IF I ever wanted to go to the beach, 9 times out of 10 I'd go to Sitges. It's only about a 25 minute ride from downtown, and getting to the Barcelona beaches would take me a good 20 minutes from my apartment anyway, including 3 metro transfers. All of that aside, Sitges is just a much nicer, cleaner, safer beach to be on. Not that the BCN beach is that unsafe (aside from the polluted water), but there are countless #s of theft when people turn their back on their valuables for more than 2 seconds. Sitges is alot cleaner and its a cool little town too. You can even get there by train from the Passeig de Gracia station, much more convenient that Sants Estacio. Also, Sitges has the best/craziest Carnaval celebration in all of Catalunya, so you should def. check it out if you are in the area around then. >:D

Don't forget nearby Castelldefels. Free wifi on the beach.

I think the key pieces of advice for first timers to Spain is to realise that supper does not start until 11pm (yes really) and siesta in high summer is not a quaint habit but vital. If you come towards high summer you will find yourself looking out for fountains and the shadyside of the street. Bring a hat. Note that old cities in Europe were not planned for cars so central Madrid and Seville are really walking areas with roads cut through so public transport and walking is the real thing..

Thanks.

I agree. 2010 is Jubilee Year in Galicia and no better time to make the trail to Santiago. Friends of mine are reckoning on a one-week's (leisurely) hike on the pilgrim's trail to Santiago followed by a second week's holiday in a holiday cottage as a reward...
