Alas, the author of this book passed away a few days ago.

I first encountered her work after asking a Spanish host where she had found a recipe for a dish we were enjoying. The host of more than 65 years, smiled radiantly and told me to enjoy the meal and later she would explain.
During coffee, I was presented with a dogeared and stained edition and told by my host that this woman had had a profound effect on Spanish cooking and that to understand recent history of Spanish food I could do no better than buy a copy.

I did indeed buy a copy and have seen a few different editions in the Spanish homes that I have visited. I imagine that this week throughout many Spanish kitchens there will be chefs reaching for their copy and perhaps preparing one of her dishes.

Below I have added two links (which will answer the original post title question) one a short review of her life/career and the second a short video clip in which she appears and some others add their thoughts on the importance of her best seller.

Is the bible still the best seller in Spain?

As you no doubt read the above quote from the linked article from "el pais" It appears some believe it is, although it seems some Spanish press articles on the same subject indicate that Quijote has sold more, while others quote the Biblia as having sold more, all just a statistic.

But for me the article is more about the life of Simone and the impact that she had on many Spanish kitchens over the years, in no small way she reminds me of Elizabeth David and the impact she had on British kitchens and British cook books that followed her style.

I still haven't got her cookery book "1080 Recetas" but it is next on my list of books to get. It is a real classic here in Spain.
