Ref Ben's post on the blog. What is Spain up to here? Some facts from the front page of El Pais (English version) today:
15,000 have arrived in the Canary Islands since the start of this year. 3 times the total for the whole of 2005.
The government has asked the European Union to send the boats and planes it needs to patrol the seas and release the 3.4m euro funding it was promised.Knowing that these people are coming, why is the Spanish government waiting for the European Union to take action? I can't believe they actually need European Union help to tackle this. It just seems pathetic game playing to me. The long term issues of this problem do not rest on Spain's shoulders but in the short term they really should get a grip.

While Spain should attempt to prepare for these immigrations, it also evident that the immigrants are just using Spain as a gateway to Europe. Perhaps this is Spain's rationale for asking for help?
As I've maintained all along, this is an unplanned, unbudgeted burden on the Spanish government. Who would have thought that 15,000 would have come this year? That's a LOT of cayucos.

I don't know the solution to this problem, I honestly don't. But as long as things remain the same in Africa and in parts of Asia and Latin America, people will keep coming north whether we like it or not (so don't shoot the messenger, LOL). BTW, it's a global pattern and I think these issues need to be addressed globally if we ever want to arrive at a solution.

So Edith, just out of curiosity, what is your take on the demographic transition model and its possible relevance on the immigarnt situation in Spain and elsewhere?
