Hey that sounds like a good deal!
Ben
12th July 2008, 02:38 PM
I'm more on the fence than I thought I would be. Telefonica want me to sign a two year contract to get an iphone from them, which just seems ridiculous. The rates would be (for me the cheapest are fine) 9 euros per month for calls, and the obligatory 15 euro data plan. Add vat, and that's about 28 euros a month, for two years, somewhere around 900 euros in the end once you add a couple of hundred-ish for the handset. That's do-able, but:
- I hardly ever use my current phone
- When I get out of the house the last thing I want is to check my email
- I'm online all day every day anyway as I work at home
- I already have a perfectly good ipod
So, if I got one it would be pure avarice, and I'm trying to keep an eye on that these days! The jury is still out...

The two year deal must be Apple's doing. We have to commit here in the US for 2 years with our provider; AT&T.
Ben, wouldn't the GPS feature help justify the purchase?>:D Come to the dark side!!

It's the time they need to get their money back and maybe a bit extra. From ABC.es :

18months with O2 (Telefonica) and they give you the phone free if you sign up to £45 a month with 1200 minutes and 500 texts.
Theres a £35 and £30 plan but you pay £99 for the phone.
Pay as you go is coming so they say
Its not the best phone in the world but the stuff it can do with apps is great
Theres one called Shazam - you hold the iphone near the car radio with a song playing, after a few minutes it tells you what the song is and whos singing... and offers you the opportunity to buy it on iTunes
The dictionary app I have is great
It now all syncs automatically with everything I own, I can take a pic and have it online in seconds, I know all this was already possible but now its easy as well - as usual with Mac, no manual required - fiddle about with it for a while and youll just figure it out.
GPS works okay if the unit can see the sky, it tracked us through leeds today, seems to be accurate to about 15-20 feet, so as we crossed Crown Point bridge it put us in the river, but not bad for free... not looking forward to location based pushmail from google though...
the 3G is noticeably quicker than Edge
It is much prettier and sits in your hand better than the old one
Ben

Looks like my current mobile phone is on it's last legs (only just noticed ) so crumbled and went to the local Telefonica shop today to ask about iPhones and how to get one... hopefully by the end of the month I'll have one.
Not too happy about paying Telefonica lots of money, but it's a legit business expense, and I can get a plan that works out at about 28 euors a month. That includes 9 euros of calls, and the obligatory 15 euro a month minimum data plan - you get a pathetic 200 mb a month at 3 G speeds, then you still get unlimited data, but 'slower', though they won't clarify what that means. No one here seems bothered about that though, due to the huge availability of wifi everywhere, and to get a 1gb at 3G plan would cost an extra 10 euros a month, just not worth it.
So, long story short, iPhone coming ;D;D;D

I'm very happy with mine. I also have a DotMac account, now called MobileMe, which syncs calendars and contacts and pushes mail to the phone and allows photo uploads from the phone as well.
At first i was a bit down about the battery life, until I realised that everything and its dog was switched on.
3G is faster but eats battery, I turn it off if I'm not using the browser,
Likewise wi-fi I turn it on when I want it.
But the real battery killer is the automatic Fetch connection to see if you have new SMTP email. By default this checks every 15 mins, turning this on to manual so that I have to click to get email improved battery life immensely to the point where its now very acceptable.
The GPS is adequate and tracked us through leeds last week, it likes a clear view if the sky and seems to work best when 3G is turned on.
Apps are good, I had to get the rotory dialler, I got the flashlight and the voice recorder all free and paid for a Spanish - English dictionary which seems more than adequate.
I have every NIS Advanced podcast on it and a dozen Twits and Cranky Geeks, some radio comedy and dozens of other podcasts, totalling 4 days in all as well as a couple of feature films and still have 12Gb left to play with...

I just went to my local(ish) store in glasgow and took one home today without any hassle. In fact this message is being typed on it right now. I would give it good reviews so far. The best thing about it is that it seems to know what you're typing before you do. Also I wish there was a version of skype that would run on it. So far I haven´t found one.

Yes you have to pay but its worth its weight in gold - especially the verb conjugator....
Also you can put a verb in in English eg talk - it of course comes up with hablar but if you click on the word hablar it will take you to the gonjugation
Its magic it conjugates the English verbs too so you can find out what the tenses are actually called in your own language!!

thanks for the tips Gary, I appreciate it.
I have a Franklin electronic spanish/english dictionary. Yet having this on my iPhone would mean one less gadget I have to have with me.
But, I just wonder after a while does the verb conjugator make one lazy or not?

I use it as a crutch - to affirm what I have written after I have committed it to paper, slowly I absorb the stuff by osmosis!!

Yes, I'd still love one, but hardly ever use a mobile and still feel terrible about the fact I'd have to give telefonica 27 euros a month for an iPhone, instead of about 12 to vodafone currently, when I'm not going to be making any more phone calls! Need a new mobile now though, I can hardly turn mine on or off anymore!!

35 days before we get ours. Much to my dismay, there seems to be a lack of free WiFi in Valencia. I understand that some bars have it and it's available around the universities and maybe the VIPS restaurants. How does one take advantage of most of the iPhone functionality without this connectivity?

mmm.. the 3G chews up mucho battery - use when needed - and is not ubiquetous, email is good enough on Edge - comes in in seconds.
Advice from experience is that if you want your iPhone to last 24 hours switch off all the stuff you arent using...
Wouldnt swap mine for any other phone - the qwerty keyboard alone is worth the premium

Yes I put my network in manual mode, otherwise it uses the battery like an 1970s american car guzzeling gas.
BTW I did pick up the Ultralingua dictionary and it is quite handy, thanks for the idea.

So my parents arrived back from España last night. While there, my mom tried several times to email me some pix she took but surprisingly, free wifi isn't as ubiquitous there as it is here. I did ask about the availability of free wifi in a Valencia forum and the view of a few is that it isn't a priority. That sort of struck me as odd. Doesn't that sort run contrary to the direction they've been running over the last decade, to make the city as world class and state of the art as any?
Anyway, as soon as my parents arrived to the US, the airport must've provided wifi because this morning I found my email inbox populated with her email pics from her iPhone.
Not this Saturday, but the next, we get ours. Yahoo!

OK, we got ours last week and we love them! We being my wife and I. It was our anniversary present to each other. Maybe too geeky for some but for us it was an idyllic celebration. We went into trendy Bethesda and had a lazy, relaxed lunch at Jaleo. Gambas al ajillo, piquillos con queso Idiazabal, jamon serrano, setas al ajillo, ensalada con pulpo y una jarafa de tinto, man that beats any restaurant I know in that area and Bethesda has no shortage of great restaurants! After that pleasurable experience we headed towards the most under-sized and over-crowded Apple store probably in the company and was quickly greeted by a youth with a bright purple tee-shirt with the ever-famous fruit logo followed by the statement "Not all heroes wear capes". He quickly ushered us to our iPhone specialist and his wireless handheld device which not only contained our pre-purchase info, but also received a swiping with our credit card and initialized the AT&T account. All told, we left the store with 2 active iPhones, 10 minutes after arrival, a pretty slick operation, if not a reference model for tech retail. Since then I've loaded Spore, iBeer, a remote for my Apple TV, the flashlight and syched up to my work Microsoft Exchange, to my boss' delight. I love having hundreds of songs to listen to when I have steady work to perform in my cube. I also love that I can open attachments (most anyway, I wish I could open MS Project and Visio). Did I mention I love my iPhone?
Here is a Gary question: how do you do screengrabs on the iPhone?
gary
20th October 2008, 03:00 PM
Hold down the big circular button under the screen, keep it held down whilst toy press and release the silver button above the top right hand corner of the screen. You will hear the shutter release sound. To view your screen grab go into the camera and click the icon at the left hand side of the screen at the bottom - this takes you to the items on the camera roll and voila!

I recommend an app called Air Sharing - it lets you connect your mac to your iPhone as a wireless drive - you can move files across. It allows you to view most the files you have stored on your iPhone - pdf doc ppt jpg you can play mp3s. So I have a pdf of the BCN metro on my phone now instead of having to carry a paper map.
Bonus : you can view a transcript of a podcast whilst you are listening to the podcast
You can connect via linux, windoze or MacOS to the drive as well as using a browser on your Mac to view the file hierarchy and contents
Very useful... and free!!

Cool four apps I just got.
1. gFlahs+ - Let's you load flash cards on your iPhone. You can customize your own flash cards with google documents (need a gmail account to do that). You can get an excel like spreadsheet (that works with google docs) and make your own flash cards. Great for spanish vocabulary.
2. MightDocs. Works with google docs and downlods all of your desired google docs too you iPhone. One stunning iPhone draw back is it is hard to save email attachments via their email program. This is one work around with the problem that you have load the doc into google docs as the side step.
3. Fring - Universal messenger supposed to work with skype. Haven't confirmed yet.
4. Ultralingua have to pay but a nice spanish english dictonary on your iPhone.

Ok two things that drive me nuts about the iPhone that I dont like
1. The inability to save attachments from email (that is why I used MightyDocs app above).
2. Lack of a cut and paste.
3. The battery usage seems to be better after the latest software updates.

Well, as you may have guessed, I have allowed myself to be convinced by some of the Apple groupies on this forum. I admit that I was also lured by the sexiness of the iPhone - its looks, simplicity and usability. I debated with myself long and hard about whether I needed the phone element and decided that I didn't - the comparative o2 contract was too expensive and lacked in some areas compared to my current T-Mobile contract, and my phone is better (as a phone). So I went for the new iPod Touch - 32Gb - bought duty-free at the airport.
I've had it 2 weeks and I'm very happy with it. Not only is it fun to use - you can quickly add all the applications and mess about with them - but it's also very handy especially around the house (no, it doesn't do the hoovering!). In the past, if I wanted to check whether I had any emails, I would either have to get out my laptop and wait for it to boot up or wait for my phone to download my emails. Now I just switch on the Touch. Also, watching TV last night, Mrs Eldeano had an idea about a Christmas present for a nephew. I picked up the Touch, looked at a few options and then bought it in less time than my laptop takes to boot up. Marvellous.
and no... I'm not getting a Mac unless I win the Premium Bonds!

Air Sharing is free too - added bonus is that you can connect from both Windoze and Linux as well as macos for file sharing. The app contains an apache web server so you or a group can view your files, though not manage them, via any web browser over wifi via an ip address, you can however right click and save as...

Time for an update on apps. I've been using Evernote for the last month or so. It's very useful, especially the offline facility and the ability to 'clip' parts of webpages. For example, I've got the page where Marina goes through the meals at the last GME and I can email flight bookings to it so that they're always on hand.
The other one I like is the WorldView which came with the iPod. You choose the webcams that you want in your favourites and view them in landscape. On mine I currently have:
Madrid
Warsaw (I can watch them putting up the new building next to the Holiday Inn)
Boston
Hong Kong - Victoria Harbour
Madrid, Glorieta de Atocha
Madrid, Plaza de España
Madrid, Plaza de Callao
Madrid, Puerta del Sol
Madrid, Plaza de Cibeles
Madrid, Plaza de Colón
Gizeh Pyramids
Moorea (one day...)
Cape Town
Venezia
London - Stratford, Olympic Stadium (in construction)
I'd like one fixed on the night sky in Finland to catch the Aurora Borealis.
I also have the Facebook and Twitterfon apps.
Anyone else use WorldView or have more application tips?
