I have a .avi video of Ourense Market taken with my Ixus pocket camera, and I really want to put it onto Youtube to show you lot. The trouble is that it is 73 mb for 25 seconds! So any of you know the best software for a pc for turning this into either a smaller avi file or a mpeg? I have a trial version of Adobe Premiere but this stamps a big Adobe symbol in one corner which is no good...

log on to www.download.com - search for video conversion - loads of pay for or FREE software to compress files. Windows Meta Video (.wmv) files have excellent compression.

There is a product here called Digital Media Converter (http://www.deskshare.com/dmc.aspx)offering a free trial download. Not clear if it is fully featured. Also a description of the issues around video file sizes here (http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/articles/dmc_ReduceFileSize.aspx).

I would agree with barca. I've used the windows media encoder for years. it's very easy to use. You just have to choose the appropriate encoding settings to make streaming an enjoyable experience for the target audience.

My son has a degree in video stuff and we have Final Cut Pro and Quicktime Pro and other stuff for compression and 10Mb broadband here so if you want to upload it somewhere and send me the link I'll be happy to see if we ( ..err he) can get it to a managable size

Thanks everyone, in the end I just uploaded all of it to Youtube and let them compress it - I was worried it would still be a huge file size but they have shrunk it a lot). Have a look and tell me what you think (Mute your speakers first, there is a kid screaming at the beginning...)

I know you've done it already, but my recommendation would be Stoik (http://www.stoik.com/products/svc/ ). I had to do a lot of video compression and resizing when I was working on a project for university and this was the only free one I could find that could do the job. There's also a paid version which is better.

Way beter picture quality than most of the stuff on youtube, do you have any quality options on your camera?
Heres et another reason for buying that Mac laptop - you could use iMovieHD to get rid of the screaming kid, put in your own audio and cross fade a few viewpoins together then export in QTime or avi at a resolution to suit your end user
Add these to the list.... she'll give in evetually
How about a bar/cafe guide/crit blog with a little vid to give a taste of the ambience - that way when we get to visit Spanish cities first timers can at least have a decent itinerary for the first night crawl.
If you could monetise that in some way you would have the perfect job - a man that gets paid to visit bars. Moreover you could find a sponsor please let him/her know I am available and would happily spend a couple of years cataloguing the bars of Barcelona

Now that sounds like the job for me! We were actually recording a podcast in a bar earlier this evening and a similar thought crossed my mind!
