ok, so i'm an american and back in spain. last time, my host mother did all the shopping, so i never paid attention to what milk she bought. however, now that i have to do my own shopping, i'm extremely confused. i was in my local M.A.S. yesterday staring at the milk options. desnatada, semi desnatada, UHT o algo.... what is the closest to homogonized, skim or 1% american milk? i dont want to make the same mistake as a friend and end up with goat milk or something else that is going to make me sick!
(as a side note, i have been drinking lots of cafe con leche in the cafes, so i guess i can drink whatever they usually use there...i just dont know what it is, although i'm pretty sure its not skim, lol)
also, sorry if this topic has already appeared, i did a search and couldnt find it

desnatada - this has least fat in it (there should be a lable with level of "grasa"),
semi desnatada - semi skimmed so has a little more fat but less than full fat.,
UHT - any type of milk that has bee Ultra Heat Treated to make it last longer on the shelf. Beware though as they still go off when opened but it's harder to tell than with fresh milk.
You'll also find fresh milk in the larger supermarkets - usually full fat or semi skimmed. We use Mercadona's and it is fine.
The great variety is often down to the additives they put in and boast about (vitamins, omega-x, etc) Start with the cheapest and if you don't like it try another unless you have special needs.
Goat's milk will have "cabra" somewhere on the label
the closest to homogonized, skim or 1% american milk probably UHT semi desnadata, at least that's readily available.
Try this Eroski page (http://www.consumer.es/web/es/alimentacion/guia-alimentos/leche-y-derivados/2001/08/06/38377.php) for lots of info (& learn some espaņol at the same time ;))
