hi all,
me and a few friends have decided to travel spain for around 3 weeks(could be more or less) next summer.
we will have very limited money and will be therefore looking to travel/sleep as cheaply as possible.

is there any places that you would recommend to go?

at the moment we are thinking of either:

start at barcelona(sitges), then along coast to tarragona, then onto valencia then alicante

OR

start at Madrid, down to cordoba, to seville, then malaga and maybe grenada instead of seville due to train links

is train the best way to go? whats the best option for us?

any advice on travelling spain that would be of use will be greatly recieved.

we also would have finished our a-level spanish so we can speak/understand quite a bit..

gracias a todos

Buses are usually the cheapest way. Check out these links:

You can good value tickets for trains if book it in advance. Read this helpful link:

If you want to do it on the cheap then the Camino Santiago could be worth considering. I personally prefer northern Spain in the summer, although it tends to be a bit more expensive.

If you can, then I think travelling by train is better (http://www.renfe.es/) since you might end up actually enjoying the journey, rather than just being desperate for it to end. However the trains are a bit more expensive.

If you go to the places that aren't quite so touristy then you may find that things are cheaper. So Extremadura or Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y Leon may cost less. Mind you there's not so much to do (because there are fewer tourists) and you may have to travel further between interesting spots.

I've always found buses both comfortable and inexpensive so long as the journey is less than say, four hours.

I would definitely do the second route… Andalucía is beautiful and there’s so much to see in Granada and Seville! They tend to be a bit less touristy too (and therefore cheaper) although if you want somewhere even more remote, you could head to Cadiz for some amazing beaches!
As far as saving money goes, buses are cheaper than trains but take much longer so, depending on how much time you’re in Spain for, you might not want to take whole chunks out of a day on a journey. Look into rail passes which can work out quite cheap in Europe.
There are lots of budget options for accommodation though – hostels in Spain are affordable (even private rooms if you’re not keen on dorms) and are usually very good quality, particularly in Andalucía. :)

I would definitely do the Andalucia route, much better, and if you have to choose between Granada and Seville, go with Granada!

i have just come back from a week intercambio to malaga, where i stayed with a spanish student and his family, with my school, and i loved every minute of it! i feel like i learnt more spanish in 5 days then in the last year(but now i don't pronoucne any S's! jaja).

now, after experiencing malaga, we are most likley to return in august for the ferria so we can meet up with our newly acquired friends, and then travel around by train with malaga as the centre, and therefore visit places such as sevilla and grenada.

I recommend you Andalucia......there are so many beautiful places there! for me Andalucia is the heart of Spain.....I especially left my heart in Sevilla.. ,Granada and on the coast .....Barbate region..with Zahara de los Atunes..(where you can find a great camping on the beautiful beach .....) ..Tarifa.... and what is more Andalucia is not so expensive ....remember that Barcelona is the most expensive city in Spain... ... ( for example in Granada...the gives you free tapas if u order a drink ;) even if those tapas arent as good as in sevilla.....its good to save some money;) ) ....entonces.... elige bien:)..pero recuerda que.."Andalucia te quiere" y es tan facil enamorarse en este region tambien....:)
saludossss

I would do the Andalucía route as well (you can always pop into Ciudad Real on the way to Córdoba!) although if you're going to do it in the summer be prepared for HEAT in places like Sevilla and Granada, where the temperature can hit 45 degrees. Ciudad Real is bad enough :(

The other option would be to do the Camino de Santiago. That's next up on my list!

If you want cheap Sitges is perhaps not the best place, although it is very nice it ia also well heeled and hotels can be pricey...
