Hi folks, Jim here from Aberdeen in Scotland. Have just started learning Spanish and found this great forum. I have written below, an e-mail that I plan to send to friends in Barcelona whom we visit regularly. Would be obliged if anyone would correct me.

Estudio Espanol y ahora entiendo y hablo un poco. Jane estudia tambien.

Queremos mucho aprender Espanol. Cuando venimos a Barcelona, queremos hablar Espanol con ustedes y sus amigos.

En el mes de Junio vamos a La Cala de Mijas para una semana. Podemos hablar Espanol alli tambien.

Esta muy frio aqui ahora. Como lo es en Barcelona?.

Es arduo escribir en Espanol y no tengo mucho tiempo. Acabo ahora!

Hello, How are things

I’m study Spanish now, I understand and speak a little. Jane is studying too.

We enjoy studying Spanish very much. When we come to Barcelona, we want to speak Spanish with you (plural) and your friends.

In June we are going to La Cala de Mijas for a week. We can speak Spanish there too.

It is very cold here. How is it in Barcelona?

It’s hard work writing in Spanish and I don’t have much time. I will finish now.

Hi Jim - I think no-one thought you'd done badly enough to correct ;D It maybe sounds a bit "foreign" in places but I'll let the native speakers comment on that. You'd certainly be understood.
I've added lots of accents mainly and if you can't type those in, have a look at the sticky in "Learning Spanish".
Just been watching the weather forecast and it doesn't seem to be warmng up much. We're even feeling chilly down here on the North Costa Blanca, con mucho viento.

Thanks for the comments and corrections.

I really don't have much idea what the subjunctive is as yet, although I have heard people referring to it. Can anyone point me in the direction of a reasonably simple explanation of it?

When you are talking about the cold, I don't think we are referring to the same thing! Spanish cold could never compete with Aberdeen cold!

subjuntivo. Umm... That is why I said sorry, because I do not find easy (or simple) to explain.

When you are talking about the cold, I don't think we are referring to the same thing! Spanish cold could never compete with Aberdeen cold!


JimI spent many happy years in Shetland, east and west Scotland so you're preaching to the converted ;D. After 35+ºC in summer though, when it hits 10ºC you feel it just as bad as going from 20 to 0. Yesterday in Denia I got caught in a hailstorm!
The plants here don't seem to mind though. There are always some flowering no matter what the weather does. Plus at present the oranges are ripening adding some colour to the orchards.

Point taken, shetland cold definitely can compete with Aberdeen cold and i appreciate what you say about the temprature difference.
