It looks like I will be going back to Salamanca again in February again with my Spanish class, this year they are changing the iteniary from going to Toledo to going to Granadilla, Cáceres, and Mérida. All the pictures look pretty but other than that i don't know that much about these areas.

Granadilla sounds really cool, a abandoned city in the middle of nowhere.

Have any of you guys been to any of the 3 places listed above?

None of them I'm ashamed to say, though I've heard great things about Merida and Caceres - lots of Roman remains and a really 'deep Extremadura' feel to them. Where is Granadilla?

We spent Easter in Cáceres a couple of years ago. It is one of the most stunning places I have been to in Spain. The historical centre is unrivalled and so well preserved. The food is excellent and great value: very strong on meat dishes and good jamon, and there are also some great local red wines to try. The people are typical big hearted Spaniards, very welcoming. We stayed in the Melia (http://www.solmelia.com/solNew/hoteles/jsp/C_Hotel_Description.jsp?codigoHotel=1001) which is perfectly situated and outside there is a pretty square with some excellent bars for a vino and tapas and good restaurants. I can still remember waking at 6am to the haunting sound of a bugle playing as another parade meandered its way through the pretty streets.

And I forgot to mention that Trujillo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trujillo,_Spain) is worth a visit too. It gets very crowded at weekends particularly for Sunday lunch, a really great buzz about the place.

You will love Extremadura!!! Of the three places that you mention I've only been to Caceres, which has a lovely old quarter, but there are plenty of wonderful towns to visit (I agree with Marbella to recommend Trujillo), great food and very nice people. Other good point is that despite having lots of tourism most of the visitors are Spanish so the whole place remains really authentic.

It's possible that we will go to Caceres in September as we have a friend that comes from there and he has invited us to go for a weekend. Iif it finally happens we will bring plenty of information, pics and sound back!!!

Cool website, yeah one of the professors from the University and her husband are here for a month, and they said that even for Spainairds this a rare place to visit. That they only found out about it last year.

Here is an awesome photo
