Volver -Pedro Almodóvar

I had actually never heard of this film until my girlfriend suggested that we go see it. After watching Todo Sobre mi Madre I knew that I liked the director, so we went last night. There are relatively few cinemas in Scotland where it is possible to watch foreign films and the fact that this film was made partially using lottery funding helped. Yes, your lottery money is going towards making Spanish film :)

Anyway, the film stars Penélope Cruz as Raimunda - a mother who has been left to do all the housework and bring in all the money. She even has to clear up after her deadbeat husband Paco (Antonio de la Torre). Raimunda's sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) operates an illegal hair salon from her flat. Their mother Irene (Carmen Maura) had died in a fire but she appears to Sole when she wants to complete her unfinished business.

I don't want to say any more in case I spoil the film for you, but definitely go see it!

Glad you liked it Alan, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing it.

Did you insert some pictures into your post? It looked like a couple of images won't load for me as I get a couple of red crosses.

Are you sure about the lottery cash? It doesn't look right to me.

I did, but I think the imdb didn't like it much :) I've replaced it with an image from amazon.com. Hopefully they'll let it be.

Anyway, I'm sure about the lottery funding. It mentioned it before the film started. I have a friend who has just come back from Brazil where he says a lot of British Lottery money is being used (and abused) too.

Hrm - I've had a look on the net and I agree: it doesn't seem right. But I'm sure that's what it said...

We saw it on Saturday night and nearly did a podcast about it but realised we would spoil the film for those that haven't seen it yet. But do go and see it! It's wonderful! It has this sort of magic-realism quality to it, and the cinematography is stunning. Penelope is back to her old self (as opposed to Hollywood misfit) and Carmen Maura is wonderful.... I forgot how good it was to go and see a Spanish film at the cinema, it's been too long...

Oh, and in the interview on the Guardian podcast (http://www.notesfromspain.com/507/), they go on and on about Penelope having a huge bottom in this - looked totally acceptable to me!

Doesn't she have a fake butt in this flick?

I really enjoyed the film, and as always I'm very impressed by how Almodovar portrais women in his films. In this one the four of them are fantastic, I really enjoyed the performance of Carmen Maura (as la rusa:D) and the way Raimunda is a real fighter. Anther thing that impressed me was the the way that Almodovar plays with the waredrobe and the first images in the cementry that almost makes you feel that the film is set more than 20 years ago.

Apparently, which makes me think it must be pretty flat in reality, as it really is not all that pronounced in the film!

Anyway, I'm sure about the lottery funding. It mentioned it before the film started.
The thing at the beginning said it was *released* with the aid of the lottery. So maybe that means the UK release was aided by lottery money?

Anyways, saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Estrella Morente has an incredible voice (she sings the "Volver" song).

The lottery site has something about them funding the digital screen network (http://www.national-lottery.co.uk/player/p/goodcauses/search/regionNews.do). More details on the UK film council (http://www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/cinemagoing/distributionandexhibition/dsn/) site, an attempt to get more non-mainstream films into cinemas using digital distribution apparently...

Phooey! This still isn't out in NYC - my friend just emailed me from Budapest and she saw it there (plus, of course, my friends in Madrid). Seems it won't be out for another several weeks yet over here.

Please, no spoilers!:D

It came out in England a few weeks ago and I was really disappointed because they weren't going to show it at the cinema I can get to... but they changed it and now its been out a while they're starting to show it so I'm going to see it Wednesday night!!!! Hehe I can't wait... Pedro Almodovar is a brilliant director and I absolutley adore Todo sobre mi Madre and Hable con ella!
