The next monday and tuesday my boyfriend and I both have two days free, we can hardly believe it but it's true. So we would really love to go one night to Granada. (We live in Madrid.) Could anyone give us some advice on well located cheap hostels with private rooms? And which sights we need to go to? We'd like to see the beautiful old things like the Alhambra, as well as the life in the city. Any information on the city is welcome. We're not the kind of persons that spend the whole day at touristic sights though. In the evening we want to have a nice dinner and go to a bar or something, get to know the people. I know two days is not enough to see everything that's worth visiting, but we don't have more time. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you are of a literary mind, visit the bar/restaurant where Federico García Lorca and his tertulia ("El Rinconcillo") used to meet most nights (there is a plaque in the restaurant commemorating the famous connection) Tapas, food and company is good and it is usually crowded. [In Lorca's time it was called Café Alameda].
Restaurante Chikito
Traditional restaurant and tapas bar in the centre of Granada..
Plaza Campillo, 9

You might also want to visit Lorca's Granada home (la Huerta San Vicente) just a short walk away in what is now Parque García Lorca (it is wise to check opening times first).

I've stayed in the Hotel Britz (http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&q=hostal+granada+plaza+nueva&fb=1&hl=en&sll=37.062500,-95.677068&sspn=23.875000,57.630033&latlng=37176698,-3595842,9101495807949168362&ei=RZ5DSfm-GYb22gKNj7GzAw&cd=5) before, a cheap hostel on the lovely and well-located Plaza Nueva. From the plaza nueva you have to do one of the best walks in Spain (http://www.notesfromspain.com/2006/09/18/a-walk-through-granada/), up along the river towards the Sacremonte.

I agree with Ben- one of my most favourite granadino walks! :thumbs-up::thumbs-up::thumbs-up: [Even better if beforehand you read Lorca's poem "El Darro y el Genil" that describes the river!]

Don't pass up the chance to see the Alhambra. You don't have to spend forever there, but definitely go see it.

Check out the Calle de las Teterías. It's a narrow, very old street that used to house tea shops. There are still a couple, if I remember right, but now has a lot of cool shops with Spanish and Middle Eastern gifts.

In the evening, walk up to the hill facing the Alhambra for sunset (I believe this may be the same walk Ben mentioned), and at night go to a flamenco cave to see some great, small dare-I-say intimate flamenco performances that are much different from the big, stage productions in Madrid.

There are plenty of bars and clubs that are good as well.

At night, grab a kebap at the Al-Andalus restaurant in central Granada.

I worked at the Hostal Viena last winter. Very reasonable rates, central location and good folks.
